Those stories you have in your head? Chances are, the author of the thing/things you love wouldn't have come up with the same ideas as you, because your stories are coloured by your background, personality, interests etc. When you think about what you would like to happen if anything was possible, or you wish a show/movie/book would go in a particular direction, and then it doesn't? These ideas are completely your own. You may associate them with the original, but they're not actually part of it. That means you can use them.

Think about it ... What if you stripped the story (or your story about a story, or idea for where a story should have gone) down to its essence, and you pinpointed what really grabs you about this world. What if you started building from there, changing things: the setting, characters' names, some characters' genders, histories, occupations, some personality traits, and then let the direction your story takes be influenced by the changes you've made. You shove everything you love into this universe, in some way, shape or form. Say you do your thing, just thinking over the story for a while. Say you read widely, and think about good story structure. You learn to recognise tired plots, cliches and Mary Sues, and weed them out. Eventually the focus shifts. Different characters and plotlines become important to you as time goes by, and as you learn more. Maybe you don't need other characters or story arcs at all.

Within not too long a time, you have a huge world, and it's all yours. You might have the basis for a novel or six.
Or perhaps you decide that this world isn't all that great, but the next one will be, because you now know a lot about worldbuilding and plotting. Maybe you can use some of what you already invented. Maybe you could parachute different main characters into your pre-designed world. Endless possibilities. :D

By making a crossover/AU, you're already moving away from the original idea, and making it your own.

It might be worth a shot. :) At least you have the satisfaction of creating your own thing. It's fun, even if you don't decide to write it down.

Here's an article that I found a couple of years ago ... I was amazed - this writer had the same idea, and she expresses it really nicely. http://hollylisle.com/fm/Articles/wc3-3.html

And you know, to some extent, writing can be taught. There are heaps of resources out there about the technical side of things. swfa.org has some good articles that apply to most fiction, regardless of genre. That would be a good starting point. If you did want to pursue writing, you can always write fanfic for practice and save your own world for when you feel your writing is of a publishable standard. That's what I'm doing. I'm happy.

That was very long-winded, but basically ... you shouldn't be too worried ... and you could channel this into something wonderful, if that was your wish. *hug*
