I know what you mean. I'm Polish and I often get shat on because of that in fandom. The best thing is, whenever I try to speak up about it and defend me/my country, everybody goes 'oh them butthurt poles lol'. I'm yet to meet somebody who would call out this sort of behaviour.

Damn straight, OP. The new episodes nor the movies were good. As for the people saying the nostalgia goggles are on too tight.. well... I just say watch a (good) old episode then a new one, the difference will be clear. I'm also behind the people complaining of the 'current' pop culture jokes that just seem to be thrown in for the hell of it.

I'm not trying to be harsh or edgy, I'm just venting my honest frustrations because I used to be a massive futurama fan (if icon didn't tip you off)

Don't feel guilty about wanting to cosplay as these characters when you yourself aren't Asian. The difference is that you are not standing in the way of the qualified Asian actors who could have starred in this movie, launching their careers and adding some much-needed diversity to Hollywood films. When I went to Anime Expo this year, I saw several people dressed as the same "Airbender" characters (a few as Zuko, a few as Toph), and they came from a variety of backgrounds. Cosplayers can even dress as characters of the opposite gender, after all, so accuracy isn't the name of the game. You're paying tribute to the series, not auditioning for the film. You don't have to feel like a hypocrite. :)

Pretty sure, OP, that you're probably stuck in the middle. Coming from the South, and from an evangelical family, I get a lot of your former insults thrown at me. But I've never gotten any of the latter in earnest. And when I did get something like that, it was because I had done something that involved that.

Being conservative isn't bad though. If you have conservative views (they do exist in a manner that isn't today's mainstream Republican party/Teabaggers), own them. But also accept that you still have internalized stuff from the Southern environment you grew up in.

I'd take it as a chance to grow. If you ever want to talk, Southerner to southerner, I would be up for it.

while I do enjoy one-sided Aang/Katara (Aang's crush is adorable but Katara's side could have used developing), I will never understand Zuko/Katara unless someone writes fic with elaborate development. there's just nothing in the series. he's just the only boy who isn't twelve or her brother. I was rewatching the series recently with my Zutara friend who said about a season one I think? episode that it was the start of her love for the pairing. they didn't even talk. not saying every fan is like that, but they don't even talk until like season three. 8( and I remember reading Zutara fic back when season one was airing.
