Cosplay for a con of a few hundred to a few thousand people (depending on size) =/= portraying a character in a movie made for millions/billions of people. Goddammit.

There are white people who cosplay as people of color and vice versa.
There are fat people who cosplay as skinny characters.
Don't worry about it. As long as you're having fun, who cares? And plenty of white people have cosplayed as Sokka, Katara, Aang, etc so don't be ashamed.

It's really not the same, OP. That's like saying crossplaying is a disservice to your gender or the opposite gender. And hey, at least cosplaying will probably be more accurate in costume than the movie, so you don't have anything to worry about.

Oh dear, here I've been cosplaying all these characters with perfect eyesight, when I'm legally blind without glasses. I'M MOCKING SIGHTED PEOPLE. And I cosplay tall characters too *weep* Heightfail!

Cosplay = Fan work.

You can't change your height/race/gender*/sexual orientation for cosplay, but it's fine not to let it stop you. Not to mention 99% of American cosplay is black and white people cosplaying Asian characters. Is cosplaying Katara any worse than an African American man cosplaying Ranma?

*before someone jumps on me about trans people changing gender, I'm talking about gender, not what's in your pants or on your chromosomes.

Plenty of white cosplayers have been cosplaying Avatar for YEARS before the movie wank. :/
