I just see them as seperate canons. I was in such fangirl rage over the movie at first (wtf karate Holmes), before I just realized it wasn't Sherlock Holmes and that was OKAY because it is a really entertaining movie on its own right with very likeable characters (yessss Watson). Just think of him as Schmerlock Molmes and you're good to go! At least, I was.

The movie had flaws that the books didn't have. But the books also did things wrong that the movie did right.

What I'm saying is - Granada Holmes, first two seasons. That's still what comes closest to perfect for me.

I've really got to get around to reading the books one of these days.

All I know is that my dad adores Sherlock Holmes books and he loved the movie. Said he thought they finally stopped dumbing Watson down on film. Or something. I can't remember exactly what he said. *shrug*

(disclaimer: I of course am not saying that because my book fan dad liked them that it means everyone should. /paranoid disclaimer)

If you'd seen many of the other film adaptations of Holmes you would probably understand better why many of us can like this version (and still hold it a bit separate in our heads.)

It certainly brought out a lot of Watson fans!

Really? Besides the Granada Holmes, this is definitely the closest adaptation IMO. I mean, it has problems, but it's still pretty close.
