You're your own harshest critic. I say just do it! Post your fic. Try not to read too much into the way people phrase their comments. Getting positive feedback can be a very significant step towards boosting your self confidence, but you have to take that first leap :) Good luck, and don't worry too much about it.

You know, if a separate journal helps, go for it! People have fic only journals all the time.

Woah, I could've written this.

Me too.

I think your idea to make a separate journal for fanfic is a good one. You could even write under a pen name or post fic anonymously if you want.

If you're really concerned about the quality of your writing I would post your fic publicly so you can get some honest criticism -- there are always going to be mean comments from some people out there, but I think if you really invited people in your fandom to read and offer helpful criticism they would be obliged to do so.
Even better is if you are in a smaller fandom where people will probably appreciate any fic at all, regardless of quality, because at least there's a better chance that people will definitely read it (that's my fear in posting fanfic is that nobody will actually read it, regardless of whether it's good or not -- not that I've ever been able to finish anything I've ever written).

Fandom is about shamelessness, OP. You have to put yourself out there, you have to self-promote. I used to be cripplingly shy about it too, and then I just said, "Fuck it." You can't have fun if you don't jump into the water.

Thiiiiis.

God I am like this so badly. Especially with the "overanalyse every tiny little thing anybody has ever said" thing.

My advice? Join a writing group in real life. I know you'll be writing original fiction, but after you've spent a while reading out your work to a group and getting feedback, you'll feel your confidence in your writing grow bit by bit. I mean what's posting something online to offering something up people in real life (who you might KNOW to be better than you) to tear to shreds?

I think most writers are the incredibly self-conscious type (we ARE awfully self-involved, as a group), so trust me, you are not alone in feeling like this

Dooo eet. If you think it'll make you less anxious about posting your fic and you really want to share your work, do it! And best of luck to you :D

I need that icon in my daily life.

LOL! I know what you mean, unfortunately :P

I envy those who understand that the point is to have fun and post fic regardless of quality too. For some reason I cannot do that.

I do not think an anon journal would help for me. I get the confidence issues while writing, before I even get close to posting.
If it will help for you. Do it.

I have a separate journal for posting fic that is not connected to this journal. it's freeing in a way because I don't have to worry about what my flist will think. it in itself is a confidence boost.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
IDK Band wagon or whatever,

but hey man, do what you need to do to feel confident enough to post fic! If a separate journal is it, then go for it, I think... It'll be good to get out of your own head a bit, I'm sure.

I know you can do it, son.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Kink memes and Anon-prompts are excellent for building self-esteem, OP. And I promise, people don't comment out of pity. If they don't like your work, they're a lot more likely to just not comment at all.
