Yeah, me too. Kinda. I mean, people can like Hetalia for all I care, I just find it weird when they like a country based on a character who consists of untrue, outdated clichés and prejudices. And is also supposedly a nazi. (Or is he? I don't know too much about Hetalia...)

[identity profile] zhyvae.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's probably the weirdest thing about all things Hetalia :/
Then again, I don't know shit about Hetalia either. *phew*

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he isn't, except in the WWII parts, I suppose. (Hetalia is not only about WWII, it has strips from pretty much every age from medieval times or earlier to modern days. And even the WWII strips deal mostly with anecdotes and whatnot instead of main events.)

And eh... one of my friends started taking an interest in ancient China because he was really into Fushigi Yuugi. Now he speaks Chinese, has been to China numerous times, teaches history of Chinese science(? something like that) at university, goes to conferences, is doing a phd, etc. Just because about ten years ago he thought "hey, this chick in this manga is hot, I want to find out more about her." I myself ended up majoring in Medieval English history & lit (and not something else related to England) because of a movie I saw when I was small. I'm not saying which, it's too embarrassing (it's not a very good movie).

Maybe the OP is not going to end up a scholar of something Germany-related just because they like the funny Germany character in a silly manga, but still, I don't think it's fair to judge them . :/

[identity profile] urania-chan.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for clearing that up! :)

Yeah, as soon as I commented I thought "wait, that came out wrong" 'cause I'm not so much against people taking interest to things because of silly reasons (I'm quite quilty of it myself with what I study... *coughs* ;)), but it's just the fake interest (if this concept even exists...) that's been bugging me lately. More like the kind that's "I love Hetalia's Germany! Guess what my great-great-grandmother was also German! I'm totally German! Oktoberfest!". I just get irritated and think "at least read the Wikipedia article or something!". So, yeah... it's been bothering me a while and got out in a badly articulated sentence. ;)

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the interest is fake... it's probably just shallow and fangirly, most of the time. But I think any interest that helps people broaden their horizons and gives them the chance to learn about new stuff is good interest, though I can see how it can be irritating, especially if you happen to be German yourself. (Which is why I usually stay far, faaar away from serious fanworks featuring with my country, especially if they claim to be "historical"...)

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Just for clarification, Hetalia only made me interested in seeing the World Cup because of the hype. After that I watched it for the teams and games, and not Hetalia.
I am German, and visit my family in Germany every chance my family can afford for it. I would love to learn more German to talk to my great-grandmother, but I only have dreams that remotely relate to Germany because I love the country even more every time I visit.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you clearly don't know anything about it. Germany just works under the boss that he has. He is unnerved by him in canon, too. Also, when Germany was not Nazi, which is actually more of the time than when it was, Germany is just Germany

Now. The rest. First, OP didn't say anything about the nation, but about their feelings toward that nation losing on football. People who know nothing about nations still cheer for them in sports sometimes.
Second, "untrue, outdated clichés and prejudices". You yourself say you know nothing about Hetalia, how do you know the character is based on untrue, outdated prejudices? Even Germans say they find Germany a cute and funny stereotype of German people.

I'm sick to death of all this senseless uninformed Hetalia bashing. If you're gonna bash, get fucking informed first >.
