I like Ginny, but she is kind of a Mary Sue. She's talented with spells and popular(in the story) and gets the hero. What's your argument again?

I don't get why being popular and getting the hero makes someone a sue ? Isn't the character supposed to be perfect, which Ginny certainly isn't, and flawless and a self-insert and the whole story is supposed to resolve around her ? Doesn't seem like Ginny to me.

She's not prominent enough of a character to be Sue. Sue's are the star of the show. Ginny's a B-character, at best.

As for your points, she's good a one spell, but otherwise she's pretty average. It's not as if she was made a prefect or people are comparing her to Hermione all the time. In fact, I can't think of any real examples of her ability being put on a pedestal other than the one spell she can do well.

Yeah, she's popular, I suppose. Though, for all her popularity, who can name her true friends/hanger-oners other than Neville and Luna?

And yes she does get the hero, but she's also got flaws. She's a hot head, she's snarky, she can be a real bitch when she's pushed (I enjoy her for that, actually). I mean, she got a good write up thanks to Harry's POV thinking the sun shines from her at times, but no other character is sitting there singing her praises all the damn time or talking about how she's "AMAZING!". Hell, if any character gets talked up about how amazing she is, that's Hermione.

Yeah, this. I don't even see how her being popular with boys can be considered a Mary Sue trait. Many girls are. But for Ginny I got the sense it was half-played for laughs, and to tease Ron and Harry. It wasn't there to show the world how perfectly sexy Ginny is.
