Actually...you're wrong. In the pop-up edition of "The Avatar Returns", it states that Zuko was to be Katara's love interest, but they decided to change it. I don't know if it's true or not (or just teasing fans), but it aired on Nicktoons Network and I was majorly surprised.

I think the whole Kataang thing was just to fulfill the "Hero wins the girl" trope that occurs in most action and adventure stories.

I'm pretty sure that that is what people like to call a "ship tease". Zuko was never meant as a love interest for Katara, but I know better than to fight with a Zutara fan.

Not a Zutara fan. Actually, I don't like any shipping in ATLA. The romance was awkward.

Just because someone likes a ship, doesn't mean they're nuts or require quarantine. I'm not even the biggest fan of this series and I think it's ridiculous the way people bait one another over preferences. It's a fucking cartoon, give it a rest. Don't like? Move on.

Don't they follow that up with "ship tease! Ship tease!" to indicate they're baiting Zutarians? They've been pretty consistently open about how for them it's always Aang/Katara.

They never followed that one up with anything. It was just one fact in a series of random facts about ATLA. I believe the phrasing implied Katara was created to be his love interest, then switched to be Aang's in the beginning.
