You're not missing out on anything. Actually, you're better off avoiding the fandom altogether, especially on LiveJournal. I love the games, but it's got one of the shittiest fandoms I've ever been a part of.

For one thing, we're a bunch of two-faced, judgmental assholes.

It's actually not too bad at face value. metaraymek and sinvraal actually do a good job keeping the primary comm itself pretty healthy enough. Scratch below the gold leaf and you'll get to the rotted wood though. A lot of hate going on towards the devs for women NPC character designs and why the male protagonist has no gay love interests while the female version does.

In short, your standard fandom drama.

No, the inability to coexist with fans who may not be as concerned with the subject or outright think differently does. The "agree with me or fight" attitude is toxic in discussion threads, but that's hardly exclusive to masseffect.

It can get combative on the discussion threads at times, but I don't think it's fair to lay all the blame for that on the people who are upset with Bioware. The unconcerned folks often get as snippy and hostile as the concerned ones. More to the point, one might wonder why, if they're so unconcerned, they don't just skip right past those posts altogether.

I think the real problem is one that most BioWare fandoms have: people getting way too attached to their player-characters and assuming that other people give a shit about said characters' love lives, favorite brand of cereal, etc. And, you know, the endless romance wars, but every fandom has those.

Really it's not so bad, but -- like with any other BioWare/RPG fandom -- there are always a few people who don't know when to quit.
