Yeah, seriously. I've never seen a latino really treated badly, unless you were in some part of the south that doesn't like anyone or something. :o Definitely not representative of the entire U.S.!

I'm from Long Island, and we have definitely had too many cases of anti-Latino discrimination and violence. Then again, New York isn't representative of the entire country, either.

I dunno why people bother comparing racism in Japan and the US, because they're racist in different ways. It's probably just the white folks coming over here to Japan and being shocked that for once THEY'RE the ones getting uneasy looks on the subway, being randomly stopped by the police "because they can," and getting asked why they're so noisy in the movie theaters.

There is nothing funnier than white Americans bitching about how racist Japan is when there are PoC in the room.

I'm not saying that any kind of discrimination is right. I'm saying that I think it is hilarious that many of the same people who will go LOL WHITE GUILT when you try to have a serious discussion of racism in the US are the first ones to start loudly complaining about "those racist nips" once they get to Japan, and when they do it in the presence of other, non-white American expats, the lack of self-awareness is incredible. Then they go home and start the I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE PERSECUTED FOR MY RACE bullshit, when even as minorities, white people still have it pretty sweet comparatively. Hell, white people are probably better off in Japan than most Koreans and Chinese.

Racism in a society is so connected to that society's culture and history that you can't really measure it on a "this country is more racist than this one" bar graph, although it seems like people love to do it. Make no mistake, I'm not trying to defend Japan as a magical land of tolerance, but I think a lot of times people lose their perspective talking about it.
