I love Hermione. I love Luna. I love Mrs. Weasley, and Katie Bell and Angela Johnson and in a love-to-hate kind of way that villains are, I love Bellatrix Lestrange, Patricia Dursley (well, she's not really a VILLAIN, but you get me) and Narcissa Malfoy.

Cho Chang was slightly annoying because she came out of nowhere and was suddenly Harry's favourite thing to think about, but whatever, I got over her midway through the 4th book and considered her with neutrality from then on.

But Ginny was...I don't know. Kind of the same way. Her sudden cutie background character-to-hottie main character transformation was more than a little aggravating. She just hadn't been an important enough character to suddenly be such a major focus. :/

So you don't like any of Harry's love interests because .... they become his love interests ?

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, no. If Ginny had always been a major focus instead of just being a big point in the second and sixth book, I would've been cool with it. She just seemed to kind of come out of nowhere with her ~awesomeness~, which was aggravating.

Honestly, I think romance as a whole seemed kind of ham-handed in the series. But I can understand everyone's desire to pair all the characters up, I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. I don't know if it's because I closely read the scenes with Ginny but I don't think she came out of nowehere with her coolness. There were all these signs that she wasn't 100% being herself and she'd like clamp up when she saw Harry. So when she stopped doing that I was like yeah I knew you had it in you girl. Just my opinion of course.

Fandom acts like teenagers that weren't always popular don't become popular later on during those years but that just seems like a bunch of bull to me. It happens all the time so I don't get the "she became popular out of nowhere" because you see her developing her own circle in GoF , though they are never named and she has her own group of friends in OoTP and what not and just, people aren't born as being all popular ya know ?

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't that she wasn't popular; I noticed that she was. It's just that, it seemed kind of like Rowling was trying to hard to have everyone end up with people we knew already, because Ginny didn't seem to be much on Harry's radar at all until the 6th book. I don't know, it's hard to explain. It just felt like the whole Big Happy Weasley Family thing was kind of overdone before it even started. :/

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah gotcha. To me, Harry seemed to be noticing Ginny a lot in the fifth book, she was everywhere and he seemed to be so aware of what she was doing that I just figured it was going to happen soon ya know ? So maybe that's why I don't feel the way you do (which is how I'd probably be reacting if Harry had ended up with Luna or something ... ick),

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT would've pissed me off, yeah. XD And in the movies, they ease it in a bit more, so she doesn't peeve me as much via film, especially now that I'm used to it, but after I first read the books, I was just angry with the whole situation. It's been three years, though. To be honest, I don't really care anymore. XDD; At least not about the pairings...the deaths are a whole other story. Haha.

I see what you're saying and the only thing I take issue with is that I think that's just how crushes -work-. You go along not being aware of the other person, then without warning something tiny happens, you notice them, and they do indeed become your favorite thing to think about very suddenly.

I liked that Harry was allowed to fall for girls who were sporty and gorgeous and spunky. I didn't mind that Ginny was a total hottie. It bothers me when female characters who are plain are "bad" characters for that reason, AND when superhot female characters are immediately superficial, evil or stupid. I thought it was funny and honest that Harry was at least a little bit shallow in his taste in women. He's a seventeen year old boy for god's sake.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I guess the reason I have an issue with it is because that's never how any of my crushes worked. I was always friends with them for years with a slowly developing thing or it was sudden and right off the bat. Never a mixture of the two. :/

It doesn't bother me as much in the movie because Bonnie Wright, while very pretty, isn't how I pictured Ginny's sudden Mary-Sue-ish transformation, so it doesn't bother me as much. But the way Harry was describing her in book six made it seem like she'd gone from that cute little first year to a redheaded Megan Fox or something.

Also, Ginny never quite grew up for me like the others did. She wasn't in the books enough until later, so she didn't really...age? You know what I mean? Like, Colin Creevey was the same way. He was in the second book a lot, and then he was only mentioned here and there, so he stayed a little first year in my head until suddenly he DIED in the seventh book and I was just like "...wait, what? 8|" I dunno. I'm not saying its any fault of Rowling's really. And it certainly didn't turn me off of my love for the books at all. It's just one of the qualms I have. -shrugs-
