I love Zuko the first time around, haha. xD; I was a HUGE fan of his because by the third episode you had pretty much gotten all the hints at his backstory: Banished, burned by a master during an agni kai, needed to regain his honor- and by the way he acted with Iroh, he was troubled, not evil. :3

The problem with integrating Mai in was that the backstory to their relationship should've been hinted at more, and we should've gotten more hints that Mai (like Ty Lee) was never a true villan like Azula. We should've figured out that Mai was perhaps like Zuko, and had stronger beliefs or something. She seemed passive to the fact that she had done wrong. Not to mention Mai's character relied on the fact that she hated behaving for her parent's political gain- which automatically ruined Maiko for me- she didn't want to be a politician's daughter, why would she want to be Fire Lady (which would require even more political savvy and measured manners?)

IDK, IDK. I maintain season 3 should've been split into two parts or something.

Ah, it took a couple of years and a rewatch for me to be able to appreciate Zuko and his beautiful character growth.
I just think that the fandom puts this inaccurate 'sex god' label on Zuko when he's really the furthest thing from one. I kind of combined the canon parts about Zuko that I didn't like with the 'sex god' label that fandom gave him and it just turned out to be a character archetype that I really don't like.
But watching the show again made me appreciate his journey and everything, but I tend to gravitate towards the more...Aang-esque characters on the first go (as i did xD).

And honestly, I love Mai so much, and I hate how she was demoted to a love interest for reasons that not even the show can explain (even though I enjoy Maiko the ship for what it is a lot; it's definitely my otp for the series)

That sounds like an idea that I can get behind.

... How would you like your internets? (It broke my heart when we didn't learn more about Mai and Ty Lee as people. Never going to trust spoilers again!)

[identity profile] doxorz.livejournal.com 2010-07-17 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
With knives on top, of course.

No, but in all seriousness, me too.
I'm definitely a Mai and Maiko fan (a huge one at that), but I wish she had gotten more development outside the relationship.
I am so mad that Mai Lee's epic prison escape happened offscreen :|

[identity profile] xlovelylightx.livejournal.com 2010-07-17 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It would have been nice to see Mai just as a person and not as someone's henchwoman or girlfriend. I genuinely think she's a unique character who would have upped the show's awesome if she and Ty Lee got some decent screen time, but you only get to see her through her relationship with the other characters. It's lame and I think that's why most of the fandom doesn't put that much investment in her, which is really sad. (I want more Mai fans to convert to Jet/Mai darn it!)

I am so mad that Mai Lee's epic prison escape happened offscreen :|

OMG YES! Why in all that is good and holy was a Mai Lee prison escape NOT included?! We had time for silly fillers but we couldn't include some epic slash/friendship for two girls the fans clearly love?! I mean the Mailee shipper in me was happy when Ty Lee saved Mai's ass but come on! STUFF happened in that prison and I would have liked to see it. D:

Woah, this so much!
YMMV obviously, but I really enjoyed Zuko and Mai's relationship for what it was. I think that Mai's the best fit for Zuko and she keeps him grounded in a way that I think that few other characters on that show can.
I just wish they gave her more personality and character outside of the role she plays for Zuko (which I found adorable as a shipper, but DEFINITELY not vital to Zuko's character). There are obviously fans (while we are the minority, we exist!) who love Mai for who she is and wanted more of her, her backstory, her parents, her life, reasons why we should like her, and reasons why she's not a villain (besides the fact that she's paired with the anti-hero) and less of Zuko using her to complete his journey when he was pretty capable of doing it without her.

I normally lean towards Ty Zula and boyslash (i stand by my conviction that zuko is gay) in the slash department but Mai Lee is definitely something I can get behind and I wanted to see their shenanigans.
Come on, show :|

[identity profile] xlovelylightx.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Though I think his time in the fire nation showed him a lot and that Iroh had a lot to do with his growth, you're right, Zuko learnt his lesson on his own and that's why I'm so proud of him. He decided to be good all on his own. <3 It may have taken him 3 season to do it but watching him grow like that was worth watching him make lots of silly mistakes!

This may also be why some fans were dissatisfied with Mai's character development because as you said, you can't get all the things you listed (history, backstory, motive behind her actions) in one episode, which is why a lot of people thought The Beach was a lame short cut at giving the girls character development. (... Well I think so because the girls deserved more than one episode to address their problems or make them sympathetic characters, especially compared to the gaang.) No one fell in love with Zuko over night, they had to SHOW us he was a good guy before he redeemed himself.

I lean more towards TyZula and Jai (Jet/Mai) too but Mai and Ty Lee was my first dangerous ladies pairing so... <3 And yeah gay!Zuko is totally possible. Especially if he and Jet actually joined forces! (Sigh, Jet... So much potential...)

[identity profile] doxorz.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It took a rewatch for me to appreciate the beauty of Zuko's character. The first time around, I was so frustrated with fandom's glaringly inaccurate (no, zuko is not a rogue bad boy sex god who sweeps helpless damsels in distress off their feet, fandom!) portrayals of him that I viewed him as that and not as the broken, troubled dork that he really is. When I watched again with my fandom goggles off, I ended up loving him.
Zuko is a really great character.

I loved The Beach, but I wanted more. If they had given us more in earlier seasons, or later on in S3, I would have been a happy panda.
But nope, The Beach was the only true character development that either girl got |:

I don't ship ship Mai Lee, but I love friend shenanigans in general and wanted some.
Jai is an interesting ship, and I've seen it around but I've never bothered to look for fic for a bunch of different reasons.

Gay!Zuko is the best. He's my fandom bicycle when it comes to boyslash, and I can ship him with anyone with a peen.
He just looks so much more interested when he's around boys then when he is around girls.
Like, he seemed much more into his whole thing with Aang than he was in all his moments Mai, Jin, Song and Katara combined.
(but then again, I adore Zukaang so im biased ;D)

[identity profile] xlovelylightx.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgive the old, season 1 fanfics that depict Zuko like that because we didn't know too much about Zuko or what he was like when he wasn't obsessing over his hunt for Aang. Some people's imaginations just run wild when we don't know much about a character. XD I do agree though, I'd take troubled dork!Zuko any day of the week.

Oh no no, I like The Bleach too but as you said, there was too much filler during the beginning of season 3. While it was fun, instead of making a beach episode they really should have just dedicated more time to the things that were going on.

Jai is an interesting ship, and I've seen it around but I've never bothered to look for fic for a bunch of different reasons.

If you still want to look for Jet/Mai fic, this place is a good one: [livejournal.com profile] jet_mai

... What? I'm the mod, I'm allowed to shamelessly pimp my community. :3 It's a very friendly but quiet comm with lots of good fics and fan art if you're interested. We don't bite, I swear!

Like, he seemed much more into his whole thing with Aang than he was in all his moments Mai, Jin, Song and Katara combined.

Mwahahaha! XD He was obsessed with Aang for a long, long time so I don't blame you.

I forgive the old, season 1 fanfics that depict Zuko like that because we didn't know too much about Zuko or what he was like.

Yes, of course! Back in those days, there really was a ton to work with so it was cool for people's imaginations to run wild. It's just the people who write him like that now that we've seen his beautiful dorkyness/that the show's over that bug me |:
I mean, that was how I felt back in 2007-2008ish. Nowadays, I don't even read that much ATLA fic anymore (probably because I'm happy with how canon turned out), so I just let the badfic be bad and don't associate myself with it. It's much easier to do that than be butthurt, anyway.

I agree. While I enjoyed some of the filler (ie: the headband, the runaway), I agree that time was unnecessarily wasted in favor of stupid shenanigans episodes. The least they could have done was write in some character development for people like Mai and Ty Lee during the filler episodes instead of sacrificing that for the fillers |:

@the jai comm:
It's cool! I'd totally be pimpin the hell outta my own comm if I had one. I'll definitely check it out sometime; the pairing intrigues me more than it probably should, lol.

LOL. Oh, Zuko.
I feel like his relationship with Aang is so under-appreciated in fandom sometimes, especially when there totally was chemistry ): (especially the dragon dance in the western air temple oh my goodness)

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention Mai's character relied on the fact that she hated behaving for her parent's political gain- which automatically ruined Maiko for me- she didn't want to be a politician's daughter, why would she want to be Fire Lady (which would require even more political savvy and measured manners?)

Thank you, this. This is particularly why I don't see that relationship working out for very long. She was whining when Zuko was fulfilling a couple of princely obligations--how the hell is she going to react now that he's the friggin' Fire Lord with a whole country to fix?

And yes, they did absolutely nothing to convince the audience that she wasn't a true bad guy--she defies Azula when it comes to jumping into dirty water, but she can sell out her little brother without batting an eyelid? O_o

I am firmly convinced that Maiko was not intended until the creators decided they liked Mai's voice actress and thus looked for a way to give her more screen time, a la Jack De Sena/Sokka.
