Thanks a lot; I'm attractive and succesful and I never felt like I fit anywhere until I got into fandom.
I'm not judging anyone here for any reason, less of all that they're qualified of "losers" in real life, so why the hell are you judging me.

lolcrymore

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know me? Do you think I was happy or popular?
I'm so tired of everyone assuming being pretty and smart means being liked. You know what? If you're socially inept, nothing is going to save you. NOTHING.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. And just because you're living a decent, successful life now doesn't mean you always were.

I'm fairly attractive, have a good life, but I suffered through abuse, rape, and poverty in my childhood. Judgmental assholes.

[identity profile] xenutia1.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly true. I'm attractive, successful when I set my mind to do a thing, skilled in a lot of fields . . . but chronically ill with it. Pretty/successful/popular does SO not equal happy.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Heck, while there might be some privilege in day-to-day life from being pretty and smart, it tends to make people keep you at arm's length instead of befriending you.

[identity profile] semi-subtle.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
so what you're saying is you're socially crippled

like, i get what your saying, but if fandom is the first place where you felt you fit in, i don't think this secret is talking about you

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the burden the pretty and ~successful~ people carry. I feel a tear coming to my eye.

[identity profile] ichthyosaur.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
that's rather shortsighted. Attractive people can be as introverted and self conscious as anybody else, and looking for the same acceptance and informality in fandom.

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think attractive people deserve less acceptance in fandom, not at all. But the fact is that attractive people have a certain amount of advantages over those who aren't and the self-proclaimed beautiful people in this thread are acting like they don't have that and need to be pitied for being pretty or some shit.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Or they just feel they want to be pitied for the flaws and insecurities they DO have. The Pretty doesn't solve everything, you know. (I'm a fat uggo, btw, so don't give me any CRY MOAR, please.)

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
It has advantages and disadvantages. Out with the exclusion for not making the pretty quota, in with the objectification and assumption that you're shallow/loose/stupid etc. And on the internet, it's especially harsh for pretty women. Look at what happened to Jade Raymond and Jessica Valenti, who got castigated and humiliated for daring to be attractive young women where people could see them.

So basically what I'm saying is that being ugly sucks but being pretty sucks too, just in a different way. Attractiveness does not guarantee a life of roses, and the beautiful people have just as much of a right to complain about their experiences as everyone else. Even if they are hot.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it, why are attractive successful people so mean to me?

Is it maybe because I treat them like shallow assholes and can barely contain my bitterness?

Is it because apparently I somehow think that being a judgmental bitch is okay if they're PRETTY?

Nah. Pass another donut.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think what you're running up against here is there are some LOUD cute and popular (literal) cheerleaders in fandom, who barged in looking for "OMG JACOB'S PECS ARE SO HOT!!" squeeing and ran into all this gross stuff like slash and fat cosplayers and people talking about how they relate to Character X because they too are depressed or not doing well in life, and the like. And being who they are, since they laugh about gross stuff out loud in life because who's going to stop them? they figure they can get away with it in fandom, too. They may be few in number, but boy, do they know how to run their mouths - er, fingers, that is. And they make you all look bad. Not to everyone - but look at your first reply, the "bawww cry more." That isn't fair to you, but people are people - they have preconceived notions and we all get to suffer from someone's at some point, sadly.
