It's not bad to say "You benefit from this and that". It's bad to say "You benefit from this and that and you should feel ashamed for that even though you have no control over it" which is what most so-called experts on LJ do.

I don't think they ought to be shamed for it. Aware of it? Most certainly.

Re: same different anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But the problem is that shaming is what happens, in great mob quantities.

It's the newest social thing on lj. Grab a latte, bring up a Snow Patrol playlist, and head over to metafandom for the latest public tarring-and-feathering of a grossly privileged writer. Quick, you don't want to miss their fifth apology (which will be deemed unacceptable and summarily dismissed)! Get your seats now!

Oh, I love this. First your implication that everyone involved is white and middle class. Plus the completely unfounded claim that the people being accused are contrite victims, just begging for acceptance. And I should remember that a lot of people posting on a subject is the equivalent of a lynch mob. I've just learned so much.

Fear the truth, stinky.

equivalent of a lynch mob.

Wow. You said it, not me. Your privilege is showing.

And the victims are NEVER contrite enough, don't be silly!

da

This is really starting to piss me off. I understand that you have an incredibly one-sided view of the whole thing and that I won't change your mind. But you can't ignore all the POC who are involved, and have been involved in racism debates since before you ever heard of them.

But the fact that you see the racists as the poor victims shows me that you'll never listen, so I probably shouldn't even bother.

Re: same different anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That is exactly my problem with discussing race on LJ, or any internet comm/chat/what have you. My career path demands discussion of race, privilege, etc., so the subjects are new to me. But this us v. them, you're wrong, I'm right is just ridiculous. I know plenty of people whose first introduction to privilege was in fandom, specifically on F!S and their reaction to anything remotely near privilege/race/empathy is extremely negative. It doesn't help anything.

Me: "So anyway, racism is pretty bad."
You: "But you are a beneficiary of institutionalized racism!"

The only directions I've ever managed to go from here without getting flamed are as follows:

1. Drop the thread and never look back.

2. Immediately express how ashamed I am and say nothing else, then drop the thread and never look back.

(AND I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS FUCKING OPPRESSION GOD DAMN)

Provided that you do benefit from systemic racism (in other words, that you don't live in a part of the world where American ideas about race and bigotry do not apply), how about just saying, "yes." It's nothing to be ashamed of, it's just how society works. Instead of putting on the hairshirt, why not just acknowledge it and move on?

Re: same different anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
You're forgetting the fact that discussion with most people is pretty much impossible after that point.

how about just saying, "yes."

Because then they couldn't be the victim, terrorized by the nasty white allies/racebenders/MEANIE POOPS.
