To summarize:
I wish people would be allowed to be contently single (whether asexual or not) more often in cannon. I wish people would be written as queer more often in cannon.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It is an excellent summary indeed.

[identity profile] 131-di.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
But wouldn't writing characters as queer for the sake of being queer be even worse?

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
True.
But that is not what I meant. I simply meant seeing more queer characters would be nice.

Oh no, I knew what you meant, I just thought I would bring it up as it's one of my bigger fears with introducing more queer characters in general.

In Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo, one of the main characters, Pierre, sort of fits this. In a really weird way. He does become infatuated with Esmeralda and she does marry him -- BUT only to save him from being killed by Clopin for finding the gypsy camp. It is made VERY VERY clear that they are NEVER romantic partners, though in time they develop what Pierre describes as a brother/sister kind of thing. Aside from an infatuation with Esmeralda that lasts all of about 3 hours or so, Pierre does become infatuated with other things -- like abstract philosophical notions, a wall, and Esmeralda's pet goat. He is a romantic sort, but despite his "marriage," he really is technically single for the entirety of the book.

In Iron Council by China Mieville... first of all, I am not sure ANY of the major characters of the book are straight, if their sexuality even comes up at all. One of them is certainly single for the whole book. Another... Judah... has relationships with both men and women but seems to really probably be a biromantic asexual. Whatever he is, although he DOES have a sexual relationship with a female friend for some time during a flashback, most of the time people are fruitlessly lusting after HIM. It's established very early on that Judah has sex the way a messiah grants favors to his chosen few. Like he's detached from it and he's doing THEM a favor. In any case, NONE of the main characters of the book are ever, as far as I can remember, in exclusive, monogamous relationships.

In The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, one main character, the primary narrator, Genly Ai, is single throughout the entire book, and no indication is ever given that he has had any relationships previously. At one point in the book, Genly and Estraven are travelling together, alone, and Estraven goes into Kemmer -- a brief time every month during which the usually androgynous people of his planet develop either male or female sexual traits and are able to have sex and reproduce. Although they have developed a close bond by that point, and although a coupling would have been scientifically interesting and probably both physically and emotionally pleasurable to both, they choose not to cross that bridge between their two peoples and their bond is never more than one of friendship and mutual respect/trust.

...aaand that's just a few I can name. But generally, I agree with you. It'd be nice to see this more often.
