I guess I wasn't clear. Let's try again: quite a few people in this thread made useful comments that would help the OP. Others complained about how everyone discussing how mean discussions of racism in fandom are. The angry, useless comments got a lot more attention than the potentially helpful ones. And I say this as someone who posted some advice.

Okay, I'll rephrase. Others complained that discussions of racism were:

Orwellian thought police
lynch mobs
an attempt to feel superior
white people trying to hide their racism
bullying
always full of personal insults
vicious, unending attacks on people who had repeatedly apologized.

And that's just in this thread, else where I've seen:

rape
war
bullying
rape again
and child abuse.

And, ftr, I'm not saying that nobody else has behaved badly ever. I'm just talking about what I've seen here, in this thread.

Yeah, your problem is that you don't notice that a lot of people that are 'discussing' racism are... doing it in a personally insulting, vicious attack, superiority complex, bullying type of way.

Oh, and are often white people trying to show off how educated they are. Or cis people trying to show off how aware of trans issues they are. Etc, etc. It really, really, sucks. Seriously, I just wish privilieged people would stop pretending they have any right to get OUTRAGEOUSLY OFFENDED at ignorance. You are not the minority that might be offended here. Stop trying to speak for them. You can point out that something might be offensive, but stop trying to look cool and hip by jumping on the dogpile bandwagon and ripping into someone without explaining anything.
