FF7 (as much as never canonizing the romance caused drama like you wouldn't believe)
FF6 (sure Celes/Locke was heavily implied but you don't even have to get Locke back in the end)
Chrono Trigger (again, Chrono/Marle is implied, but it doesn't go anywhere in the game)

Call of Duty (which may not count because there's one female character - but hey maybe it still counts because she never gets romantically involved with anyone)
90% of SMT games (either there's no canon romance and you can pick your own from a host of characters including those of the same gender, or there's none at all, as in Nocturne and Strange Journey)

But but but Vincent/Lucrecia was canon last time I checked? I don't follow the compilation (or the fandom)... good catch on FF6 and CT, though. And that list says lots and lots of good things, to me at least. :3

Yeah, but Silent Hill also has Harry/his wife, ostensibly, but as she's already dead before the game starts I don't think that counts >_>

Games tend to be less about the romance in general (not all games, mind - see FF8), I think, and my fandoms are mostly games.

I suppose if we're talking old anime fandoms there's X/1999 and Yami no Matsuei, where the driving canon romances are gay ones.

Mine, too, are games, and since I grow tired of fictional romance pretty quick I'm happy that, as you say, there's not as much focus on that as basically everywhere else. But things like Valkyrie Profile, imho, would manage better without some of the unexpected romance, ditto Baten Kaitos and Phoenix Wright (kinda). And heck, Mario. Imho.
JRPGs in particular can't seem to be able to build a party without a main couple shoehorned in somehow (LoD I'm looking straight at you): some FFs, Chrono and SMT are valuable exceptions. Come to think of it, so is Suikoden...?

Ugh, yeah, aside from some FFs, CT, and the megaten games, JRPGs are atrocious for shoehorned romances. I've always meant to play Suikoden but I want to play the series in order and I can never find the first one anywhere.

I sort of forgive LoD for having the best physical fighter the chick who you would expect to be the black mage (Rose does by far the most phsyical attack damage with her best weapon) and the best magic user the boy who you would expect to be the sword-wielding hero (he does have the sword, but is better with his flame attacks). Doesn't excuse the awful romance with the useless little sister character though, damnit Japan.

I also forgot to add DMC2/3 - I remember how much angst and handwringing there was over which of the hot brothers the hot chick being introduced in 3 would end up with and... SPOILER: NEITHER OF THEM.

Oh riiiight. The implied couples. I forgot that two people who respect each other, try to help each other, and watch each other's backs on the battlefield are totally doing it.

I mean, Soap carries that gun for five years, man. And Price catches him so he doesn't fall out of the helicopter and picks him up when he falls and leaps into danger when he's about to get shot... from this Infinity Ward means us to understand that Captain Price and Captain MacTavish are having hot fierce buttsex off-camera, just like Steve and Claire would have if one of them wasn't dead.
