Really. Because bullies aren't created in a vacuum. Somewhere along the line, the trash-talking, trend-hopping "white ally" bandwagoners were unaccepted and unpopular, which is why these 40 year old acafan shrews all seem to take such particular glee in ganging together to savage some hapless little 17 year old fanfic writer who isn't worldly enough yet to know that what she wrote was racefailing. So fine, let's tar and feather the poor dummy so she will NEVER EVER EVER dare to write anything ever again HAHAHAHA!

That's the sad part. :( I wish there was some common sense, proportion and moderation in fandom. Someone who writes a racefailing fic does NOT deserve to be metafandomed, linkspammed, and receive 300 comments from total strangers telling her how she deserves to DIAF. She doesn't deserve to be run out of fandom or called a loser, a racist, a human failure and a waste of skin.

My only conclusion is that some people are sadists who think that mental abuse is fun and have just found a neat and blameless way to engage in it. Lucky, lucky them.

Oh totally. I was actually a part of some communities wherein people did that (not over race, but over other isms.) I thought we were saying "frell nice" or "stop with the tone argument" because we were right and it mattered.

No idea if it still exists, but I still recall how the intersection of wank over that one and personal feuding on my flist went down. I ended up getting banned from both fem_rage and feminist (after I left them, mind you), and with comments in my inbox from a fem_rage mod that said things like, "We're glad you're gone because no one in fem_rage liked you anyway, and we're all laughing at you behind your back, haha."

Considering how little I actually participated in fem_rage, I wasn't inclined to believe that (I don't think people knew me enough to dislike me - I did flounce, and they could have laughed at that, but whatever), but the reveal of true colors there was...interesting.

Yeah, though maybe not the one you're thinking of. It wasn't rage, it was a smaller one I had mod privileges in for a while. I'm not gonna say where or who the other mods were because I'm not interested in making specific ex-friends look bad. But I was, "let's decide what to do about this" and they were "you're a mod, do what you want. We do it all the time. It's fun." And that offended my honor, as pretentious as that sounds.

I left rage over some wank about images of kink. Someone was triggered by it and raging at it and I and some others were "wait, you're raging at stuff I do, can we have a little separation between 'this triggered me' and 'this is sexism' plz?" And it sort of began okay, but became a wankstorm. I don't remember how much of that was my fault, though I'm willing to say some probably was. I was kind of a dick back then.

But it basically got to the point of me emailing the mods and their saying "Don't make us ban you. We like you. But we will if we have to."

So I left.

It makes me laugh when I see them react similarly to Mary Sue writers.

When people start speculating about the motivations of others, I usually assume that they're really talking about themselves. Considering what you've said in this thread, I have no trouble believeing that you're a nasty hag who enjoys insulting people who have been deemed fandom whipping boys (and, yes, hear on fs, in this thread, people discussing racism definitely qualify).

As for everyone else involved... they probably has a variety of reasons for doing things, some good, some bad. Just like in every other part of life. I'll judge them based on what they say and do, not whatever motivations I project on to them.
