(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 03:28 am (UTC)(link)Whether fandom wants to believe it or not, there are TWO definitions of racism. The sociological definition is Racism = Power +Privilege, whereas the interpersonal definition is more the discrimination and prejudice against someone because of their race.
So in the first definition "reverse racism" DOES NOT EXIST because racism cannot be exercised without the power and privilege. Most people arguing against affirmative action argue "reverse racism," but because the groups benefitting from affirmative action are already affected by the institutional racism against them, there can be no "reverse racism."
The interpersonal definition as I stated is discriminating against someone for their race. If a singular PoC discriminates against a singular white person for being white, for instance, then it is not "reverse racism" in the interpersonal definition, it's just racism.
This is why "reverse racism" DOES NOT EXIST.

Like I said, if we're talking racism as prejudice + power (the sociological term), then the group without power cannot exercise reverse racism, white or otherwise.
If it's interpersonal, then the term racism is applicable, but again, not reverse racism.
