Hugh Laurie's accent is very convincing, so I wouldn't really blame the casual viewer that much for thinking he's American (even the director did initially, wasn't it?), but for a person who claims to be a fan still thinking so is outrageous.
By the way, have you seen Wilde? Very traumatising stuff (JUDE LAW & STEPHEN FRY), but Fry was so absolutely brilliant as him. Perfect!
