Yeah, I know. Especially since all I, personally, can remember about the adaptation was the outrage over this. In fact, it has been brought up when referencing The Last Airbender by both the media and in fandom discussions.

The white-washing of Earthsea was the only thing I know about the adaptation. I think we discussed that in Contemporary Children's Literature.

Let me add: Not only have Whites played characters intended to be Black, Asian, etc; they've played actual, real people who were Black, Asian, etc in real life. I find that much more offensive. So tell me: Did you RAGE about the movie 21, in which the mostly Asian real life people where played by White actors? How about the fact that in A Beautiful Mind John Nash's Hispanic wife was played by the very white Jennifer Connelly?

And I know it isn't new, not by a long shot. But some of the secrets or comments you get about racebending sounds like people think it's a new problem or something.

The reason the racebending people are mad is BECAUSE there's such a long history of whitewashing in film, and the reason you've been hearing so much about it recently is because it's a current event. Provide me with any examples from the racebending website where they're mad because this is the First time ever! that whitewashing has happened in movies.

I did not know about this! I knew about the anime from Miyazaki's son, but this sci-fi thing is new (and disappointing) news to me.

The fact that Earthsea wasn't a theatrical movie and wasn't as mainstream as Avatar is probably why the outrage was so much quieter.

The difference is that AtLA has a huge, active fandom and, as far as I know, Wizard of Earthsea does not. Plus, AtLA's movie adaptation was a major motion picture done by a well-known (if not well-respected) director, unlike WoE, which was a SyFy miniseries.

I'm pretty sure that the original controversy did make fandom_wank, if that makes you feel any better.

IIRC, Le Guin has said that most Earthsea dwellers would look close to Hawai'ians in Earth terms, so definitely what we'd call people of colour or non-white, but maybe not quite black?

Not that it actually matters when it comes to the whitewashing, which is indeed infuriating.

I'm glad the Swedish edition of the translated A Wizard of Earthsea which was my first exposure to Le Guin left him brownskinned on the cover (with dramtic long black hair and intriguing scars, too). ;)
