please stop using "fandom" and "fanfic" interchangably; the latter is a small portion of the former

It always saddens me how small and inactive the fandom is. I blame the intimidatingly perfect quality of the writing for dissuading fic writers, though.

This. It's like The Wire fandom all over again.

Ha, I guess it's a good thing that the fans are so satisfied with Breaking Bad that there isn't a need for fanfic... Hm, that'd be a hell of a research topic. So The Wire was pretty barren too? I know critics are head over heels for that show (starting to watch it, pretty awesome so far).

It'd be neat to find a relationship between "superb" writing and the magnitude (or lack thereof) of a fandom. Although that'd probably end up sparking a bunch of controversy...

Same goes for Deadwood and Mad Men. It would be neat to find that relationship. :D

I do too, seriously. It's the same thing with Deadwood. Shows that are actually crafted impeccably just seem to be enough for viewers, I think. Or, at the very least, viewers are wary about contributing to already terrific writing.

It would be gilding the lily. I'm always kinda sad that there is less of a Deadwood fandom, but really... I wouldn't want any fic. I don't think any writer could hold a candle to the original screenwriting.

Exactly. There's almost nothing about any character on Breaking Bad that hasn't been beautifully explained onscreen. Sure, I'd read a fic about Jesse after high school when he was getting into cooking, but even that's been adequately recounted on the show with his rehab/group meetings subplot.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not a good enough writer to pull off fic of any sort.

Plus at the moment canon's not really leaving me wanting anything, which, weirdly, even fandoms I like more usually do.

I am unsure if I want to know the fandom for this show.
On one hand fandoms can make me enjoy really long waits, and on the other hand... I am not sure how to say, but it can kind of disillusion me from the actual show a bit?

Besides that, Breaking Bad is fucking awesome and such a tightly and well-woven story I know am too intimidated to even try.

(But I swear to god I would kick a puppy to see some well-written fluff for Marie and Hank and some more .gifs to use in reaction posts.)

Generally I find that when a show has very high quality writing, isn't sort of crazily melodramatic or driven by ships, is tightly plotted without a lot of space for "unseen moments" and has a small but loyal following, there isn't going to be much fanfic. Six Feet Under didn't result in much fic either, IIRC.

Same here. I've found that to be true with Mad Men and Deadwood, too. And personally, I don't even look for fic for those shows because I can't imagine anything any of us writes could be as satisfying as the writing/acting in the source material.

I write fanfic and I love Breaking Bad... but I don't intend to write fanfic for Breaking Bad. Like JLH said already, it's very tightly plotted. Plus, it's so damn good that anything I'd write would be an injustice to it.

I totally understand the lack of fic; I'd be intimidated as hell by the quality of the show, if I were a writer. However, on the topic of a lack of pairings: the fact that Walt/Jesse isn't considered an obvious pairing makes me question everything I thought I knew about fandom. I don't ship it, but it shocks me that almost no one else does, either.

Right!? I mean, I kinda sorta not-really ship it (sorta in denial about it, lol). I think I've only ever found one Breaking Bad fic and I don't even remember what it was about. I read it pretty reluctantly because I don't think it did the show justice - which goes back to the whole, the writing is too awesome to be messed with.

But even then, I'd probably be really content with reading gen fic about those two - all that time in the desert cooking meth must have led to some interesting conversations.

I think that adding fanfic to an already perfect canon is sort of superfluous. No one can measure up. I feel the same way about Deadwood, The Prisoner, and Mad Men fandoms too.

I agree with everyone who's said that the quality of the writing can be intimidating. The characterization in Breaking Bad works on an almost subliminal level sometimes; it doesn't give you that 'fill in the blanks'-impulse many other shows do.

That said: Breaking Bad secret ♥

As others have already said, the show's writing itself is nearly flawless and leaves very wanting the imagination. There wasn't much of an Arrested Development fandom either - at least fanfic-wise - for the same reason.

I love the show, but honestly, the thought of Walter/Jesse squicks me to no end. And I really am not thrilled with any other potential pairing either. None of them makes any sense. I not even thrilled with the pairings on the show. And I am not even sure gen would work. I see the whole show as a cautionary tale of someone who had good intentions, but forgot that the road to hell is paved with those.

Really?! There's no fandom? I've seen exactly one episode, but I just assumed the angst and excellent acting would encourage much ficcing.

Firstly, I just have to express love for seeing any BB secret here, always.

Secondly, I have to agree with everyone else; the quality of the writing is just SO damn good, it really can't leave you wanting, I don't think. One of the best fandoms I've been a part of (The X-Files) I have always felt is probably so active and bursting with fic because canon is such a goddamn mess full of loose ends and contradictions and confusion and mistakes. People love it but also want to fix it, if that makes sense.

But again, love for this secret. I do get frustrated sometimes by the lack of overall fannish activity (I nearly died when I encountered a fanmix a week or so ago), it's hard to even find icons! And that ain't right, 'cause it's the best damn show on TV. That's right, I said it.
