I fail to see why one cannot like both, cannot see both artists as geniuses. Disney was certainly a bigger influence on artists around the world. He created some beautiful films that pushed a medium to bounds that had previously only been toyed with relatively unsuccessfully. He was a shrewd businessman who turned animation into a profitable product and thus opened the doors for other animators to gain funding for their projects. I would argue that his films, though showing the world stories in a way they had never been told before, were not exactly the most original in their choice of storytelling devices. I'd also argue that he himself recycled themes and motifs, though not to the extent that Miyazaki does.

I think I see what OP is saying with that point, when speaking of innovation and influence on the animation industry- you really cannot compare the two. You cannot compare anyone to classic Disney because they invented so many ways of doing things and set so many standards that almost everything in the animation industry now is in some way an expansion of what they were doing back then.

This is not even about personal preference, it's just a fact that Miyazaki creates beautiful films but is mostly working with materials that were already there. Disney had that advantage in some cases, but not many, and even when the studio was not inventing they were always improving on techniques and technology.

The only comparisons you could make would have to be about a 3d animation studio, because 3d is a "new" medium in the way 2d was "new" in Walt's time, but I believe that will take you just into talking about Pixar.

You can love Miyazaki and you can even hate Disney, but you can't deny Disney's influence on the world.

I don't claim that Miyazaki is an innovator. In fact, his obstinate clinging to older techniques and practices in a market swept up in a blind rush towards innovation are part of what endears him to me. The facts are that he consistently creates films that are visual stunning and extremely enjoyable. His themes that he recycles are ones that resonate with my personal beliefs. His films are almost all visually unique from each other and pretty much everything I've seen, even if his storytelling retreads similar territory. I DO love Disney's classics, I DO recognize that he was largely influential (though I think OP is exaggerating his contributions and originality a little) but that does NOT mean that I think Miyazaki is some sort of a fraud or somehow inferior. Miyazaki is a very talented man who has more personal involvement in the production of his films than Disney ever did. Miyazaki has proven that the old ways were not broken and that they can profitably exist besides the new ways. He has shown the world that non-American countries can produce stunning and universally appealing animated films. He has immensely pleased and stimulated me personally. Walt Disney is largely irrelevant to my feelings on Miyazaki. As I have said before, the comparison is an extremely poor one. Regarless of Disney, Miyazaki IS a genius, in my book.

It bothers me that, apparently, one cannot like someone/something without being a stan about it. I like both Disney and Miyazaki, knowing that both can and do make mistakes, and will most likely continue to do so. Neither is the be all end all of animation.

I do like that Miyazaki ties "Hey, we should take care of the environment, or bad things will happen" into his movies, I just wish it weren't necessarily in EVERY movie. It's a good message, but you don't have to beat us over the head with it.
