I kind of get the same feeling. I can't even get trainwreck value out of most badfic. It's just so cringe-inducing.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Claiming authors produce "secondhand embarrassment" is just the newest way to passive-aggressively flame them.

It's not that I think I'm better than the authors or anything

lol, yes it is.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-27 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't write for crap, so why would I think I'm better? At least they're producing something.
-shrug-

[identity profile] criedfratricide.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You new here? The point of F!S is to passively flame others.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not new, I just try to fight it against it, in vain. (Dressed in all black, like in The Matrix!)

Especially when people try to pretend like that's not what they're doing. Although OP did make it a secret instead of leaving an anon message to someone like "hey dogg your stuff is giving me secondhand embarrassment, NO OFFENSE" so I guess that's something.

Just click away and mooooooove on

[identity profile] criedfratricide.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I don't really get why you're offended when the op makes a point that they aren't like the douchewaffles that spend so much time publicly scrutinizing bad!fic. Instead they just hit the back button and don't even read it. I think that's preferable when compared to picking it apart in comms like badficquotes and whatnot.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she doesn't say they're douchewaffles, she says she doesn't understand how they have the STRENGTH and COURAGE to make it through badfic; why she's such a delicate flower that she can hardly read a paragraph without getting ill from the utter humiliation she bears on behalf of the poor author etc etc

[identity profile] criedfratricide.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I didn't read it that way. YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-28 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I didn't get that from this secret AT ALL. Talk about projecting.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably right.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, flaming authors in a fandom secret they'll never individually know apply to them.

That makes perfect sense.

[identity profile] serenemiss.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My major turn-off is bad grammar/spelling/syntax/etc. I can usually tell by reading the summary if it's worth reading or not. Sometimes the summary fools me and I start reading the story and it's just utter shit. Some are so bad it's literally hard to read. I'll get to a point where I just can't read anymore and turn back.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've reached the point where I've learned to forgive myself for making writing mistakes. I love my old writing, warts and all, because it's my journey, and there is merit there. It makes it much easier to overlook other people's failures and concentrate on their successes. And though I laugh at trainwrecks, I laugh with the idea that they do make the world a better, more interesting place, and that one day those writers will work their way up to the point where they can point and laugh at mistakes as well.
