Think of it this way: Since Aang is --or was--twelve, you can conceivably think that the initial development of their relationship would be a little lopsided at first

Yeah, I just wish that it had been like, suggested, but not definitely resolved that Katara and Aang were going to get together, you know? Like, I'd be okay with it being like a, "maybe in a few years and we'll see what happens when you're done with puberty," kinda thing, rather than a "they kiss, AND THEN THEY GET MARRIED AND NEVER DATE ANYONE ELSE!"

Cause you know, also, Katara is the only girl that Aang's seen outside of some nuns once at another Airbender temple. I don't think it's really fair to him either.

You know, actually, thinking about Aang and Katara not starting a relationship for a few more years, growing up, going through puberty, maybe seeing a few other people and then being like, "No, you know what, it was you all along!" would actually make me feel a lot better about Kataang as a whole.

Well, basically I just want to repeat that it might be easier to look at it without viewing from more modern western culture-goggles. We're all thinking about this from our own cultural experiences, etc etc.

I do agree that it might've worked better if they'd done a little more developing, but like I've said before, we don't know what their relationship was like after the kiss at the end. We might get to see more of it later in the new series, so I'd just rather withhold most judgment until then.

I think my problem with the cultural thing is that in a lot of ways their culture resembles ours, when it comes to teen relations (probably so that...you know, teens can relate to it).

It doesn't seem to be out of the norm for teens to date, and flirt, and be interested in one another and whatnot. We see Zuko go on a date with a girl and it's treated as not a big deal at all, just a date, like anyone in our time would do. He's not betrothed to anyone or anything. Azula makes out with some random dude at a party, and it's no big deal (well, Azula has a hilarious little speech, but it doesn't seem to be anything serious). Ty Lee flirts with guys all the time, and it doesn't have any strings attached.

The most we see in series is the mention of arranged marriage, but even then Gran-Gran left hers, and there didn't seem to be any sort of consequences (besides, you know, her leaving).

So it's weird to me that they're portrayed as pretty much the same way relationships are portrayed in our world...but then Katara and Aang meet when they're 12 and 14, respectively, date no other people and then get married...I don't know, it just seems kinda weird to me.
