Also, one of my friends had a lingering cough and was tested for tuberculosis twice, only to discover that it was a side-effect of another medication she was taking. I wouldn't freak out about it.

You sound like a complete hypochondriac.

I used to get a lingering cough every year, like clockwork. Once, when I was 8 or 9, it lasted 6 months. It was always a throat-based cough, with no bronchial involvement or phlegm, just constant irritation that wouldn't get any better even on a diet of Vicks and Triaminic (or, once I was older, Fisherman's Friend and Robitussin). I ended up learning to dissolve Sucrets in hot water and gargle the solution so I could sleep without numbing my whole mouth. If it's not a chest cough, not productive, and you don't smoke, chances are 1) it's not life-threatening and 2) there won't be much a doctor can do for you. Except possibly prescribe dextromethorphan in an isolated form, so you don't have to get the stinkeye from drugstore employees who have to unlock the cabinet to get it for you.

Also, seconding the recommendation to talk to a pro about the fear of death.

Wow, can you get a prescription for straight DXM in the United States?

I'm not sure, as I've never needed to try. The drugstores where I live at least used to carry it non-Rx in the locked cases. I think the last time I bought any was a couple of years ago; there was only one tiny size, and a quantity limit. That was when I looked up recreational use...and wondered why the Benadryl wasn't locked up too. But yeah, I imagine that in places where you can't get most narcotics without being admitted, you can't do it with DXM either.

Good luck, OP. I'm sure you'll be ok physically (lingering touch of bronchitis or something?), but I agree with the folks who said it might be worth seeing someone about the fear itself. This from a dyed in the wool hypochondriac with a phobia of death *and* of doctors :/
