Great, now we got a thread full of people listing things they don't like about America as if they don't exist throughout the rest of the world. Despite widespread belief to the contrary, America does not have exclusive rights to stupidity and fail.

I'm always surprised at how much anti-American sentiment I see from actual Americans. We could be the most self-loathing country in the world

well some of us need to make up for the rest of us who can't stop thinking the sun shines out of our assholes.

I dunno, I haven't met enough Americans who actually do think America is awesome to warrant that kind of balance. I'm starting to think they're an urban legend.

If you're anywhere near Michigan, I could hook you up with my father. In general I do agree with you here, but the man is an exceptional example of truth in that urban legend.

They tend to not be on the internet. Or at least not on (sort of) civilized places.

Oh, they're on the internet. Just mostly not Livejournal.

But you'll find them in places where everyone's got a huge twinkly picture .sig.

My ex-boyfriend and his family were good examples, unfortunately. But we lived in different states, and I never really met alot of people around where I live that were like that, so maybe it depends on where you live.

Americans as a whole are definitely more patriotic than most countries. The overwhelming majority of people I know think the United States is the greatest country in the world. For extreme examples see the Republicans and Tea Partiers which make up a scary percent of the population.
It's just the younger generation that tends to be more educated that sees America's faults.

We need to "make up" for annoyingly nationalistic Americans by disparaging ourselves for being American? Do you realize that is just as fucking annoying?

I'm just annoyed at how many of the "grievances" people have with America are universal problems that apply to almost everywhere on Earth.
"Well, there's a lot of racists in America!" - there's racists EVERYWHERE!

Well some people are so high-strung that even saying that I was proud to be an American would be considered smug to them.
Having pride in your country is only acceptable when that country is not the United States, I guess.

And then we can't even agree about what the things wrong with the country is. This place is kinda schizoid.
