Isn't the point of Mal that he is an asshole? As a walking, talking example of the Good Is Not Nice trope? () And as a break from the traditional stereotype of the charming, dashing, charismatic Space Captain? Mal's a bitter jerk, but it's a role he's thrown himself into and forgot how to stop playing.

Also, fugly? Beauty's in the eye of the beholder. Ain't nobody can rock the Kinsey Scale quite like Captain Tightpants. ...I'm just sayin'.

Yeah, I couldn't get past a couple of episodes of Firefly because I hated Mal so much. Most of my flist loves it a lot, so I keep meaning to keep watching because I want to be able to squee with them, but every time I try, he is the Eskimo standing in my way. :/

I knew a guy IRL who idolized Mal and basically did his best to look/act just like him. He was a total douche who used his depression and anxiety as an excuse to be a needy asshole, and he hid his raging nice-guy entitlement behind a veil of misogynistic "chivalry." When my friend finally consented to go out with him a couple of times (he'd been pining for her for YEARS), within a couple of months he started talking about getting married. When she backed out, saying politely that she wasn't ready to get married, he said it was because she was "immature" (among other things). Then he flounced.

Cool story short, bro: I cannot look at Mal without thinking of Sir Douchenozzle the Entitlement Bitch. So yeah. I'm not his biggest fan, either.

I wouldn't have had a problem with him if we weren't supposed to like him in spite of all that. But yeah, the way his character was handled made me grind my teeth in practically every scene (especially how the other characters were written when around him)

That's a good point - normally jackhole characters are my favorites - (See: Jayne, and Sawyer from LOST). But the viewer wasn't supposed to like them. With Mal you could tell that the writers thought he was the coolest character ever. :/
