i kind of agree with you, op. i love ned/chuck but they could never really be together in a satisfying way. it wasn't a healthy relationship because he had to be on guard all the time and if he did wind up touching and killing her he'd feel incredibly guilt for the rest of his life.

I sort of-ish agree. But I LOVE Ned and Chuck's relationship. I mean, the not being able to touch without Chuck dying is sad, but...idk. They're too adorable and I completely understand they're love for each other.
I think Ned DOES like Olive, because you've seen signs throughout the show, and SOMETHING would have happened had the series gone on longer, but I can't imagine Ned choosing Olive over Chuck. Even if she had left.

See, the thing with that is that the Narrator and Olive and even Chuck called it "love." And maybe it wasn't love exactly (more like lust + adoration + just plain love), but it was shown as unrequited love. And even when Olive acted weird about it (looking in his window, constantly reminding him of it), Ned is also weird about his secret in a) pining for a girl he last saw at 10 (12?) and bringing her back to life, and b) about who he could tell his secret too. (Seriously, he should've told Olive and the aunts much earlier).

Although to be honest I liked Olive better when she wasn't pining for Ned--it was those mutually cute moments (their talk in the nunnery and "I wouldn't say never") that were for me.

I kind of felt Ned/Olive was supposed to be the end game too. I felt like it was going to be a part of Ned growing up and getting over some of his issues.

But I also felt like Chuck should have died, it might be an unpopular opinion, and it's not because I dislike her, I just think her character arc needed to end that way.

I love this secret simply because of the fandom )': every time I think about this show I become SO SAD AHH ;3;

but I also love it because I agree with it. it's partly because I generally dislike chuck, but my own personal bias aside, her and ned are so unhealthy D: I agree with the anon above--she should have died. I don't say that because of my dislike for her (I'm not one to dislike a character and then be like I HOPE THEY DIE AHHH, in all seriousness anyway), but uhh it felt like she NEEDED to die. her being alive just felt so wrong.

also olive and ned felt better suited for each other, even if that means many many many episodes of character and relationship development. i WOULD HAVE ADORED THAT, ACTUALLY ;3;

Yes, agreed! Chuck got more and more annoying as the show went on - she was so freaking selfish. Olive was a way better character and I prefer to imagine that she and Ned got together eventually. It makes me sad that it's impossible to find non angsty fic for Ned/Olive - it's almost all "Olive spends the rest of her life pining after Ned. The end"

This is the kind of thinking that got the show cancelled. Modern BAWWWWW ANGST fiction simply can't handle the idea that a childhood crush may actually really be somebody's One True Love, and needs to Dramatically Split Them Up in order to Create Tension With A Third Person. Waaaah.
