I love seeing people get hurt in movies or TV shows but I can't stand when animals are harmed.

I'm the same about cats. It's a byproduct of the "injured-cat yowls are funny LOL" trope combined with my own ailurophilia. As for why the humans aren't as heartstring-tuggy...there are usually a lot more of them. You have to be made to feel for specific ones.

I think that's pretty normal. Not the dolls or toys, but if there's a cat or a dog in a movie and it gets killed or badly hurt, I find it more painful than if people do.

I think some of it comes from being desensitized more to violence against people. Like, for many movies, you go into them expecting humans to die, you're prepared, you have a lot of practice dealing with the idea that they're fictional characters and distancing yourself from what happens to them.

Also, I don't know, with animals there's more sense that they didn't do anything wrong or understand the situation they were in. They were just hanging out being a cat or whatever. With humans, there's a lot more sense of agency and understanding.

Yeah, I have that problem too anon. But with all animals, not just cats. I'm a big animal lover and nothing ruins a movie quicker for me then unnecessary animal death/carnage.

(And almost a year after my first reading of "Deathly Hallows" I am STILL most upset about Hedwig's death, though several of my top favorites died too. WTF, JKR?)

When I was little, any book or movie with animal suffering traumatized me. I never watched The Incredible Journey because the idea of the animals getting left behind was upsetting, Old Yeller was just a bad experience, etc.

Now that I'm older, these things don't traumatize me to the same extent, but I react the same way you do. I just saw Salt, and the instant the dog was on screen I was worried about his safety.

I get upset when any toy with a face gets hurt. I blame that on a combination of Toy Story and my childhood insistence on carrying my teddy bear everywhere. When animals are hurt, I think they're usually portrayed more on the level of children in terms of innocence and agency, and we're not as desensitized to them because they're not killed in media as often.
