Some fandoms are like that, mostly the smaller ones. People are so grateful to find like-minded fans they couldn't give a fuck if you like to pair the main character with a lampost, as long as you write something.

Fandoms aren't hugboxes. But that comic is cute and I do wish there was generally less bitching. That said, there are specific fandoms that scare the crap out of me that I wouldn't go near with a ten foot pole.

I think fandom is pretty rubbish, overall. Especially with the whole BNF subculture that goes on...too much like Mean Girls for my liking.

I've found the best way, for me, is keeping myself to a small flist and never really interacting with fandom a large apart from when I post fic. I tried to do fandom "properly" a few times and it never made me anything but totally miserable. I did high school once...why would I want to repeat it? What galls me is the worst behaved people in fandom are too often the "elders", people in their 30s/40s with kids of their own. What is it about fandom that makes people who are probably perfectly sane offline behave like total morons?
