I want so badly to say this exact thing to certain people in my fandoms. To one attention whore in particular, who I'm convinced is lying when she harps on and on about all the flames she says she gets.

I don't get why people let flames get to them. Is it really that hard to ignore someone on the internet you don't really know? Unless they're continuously following you around and harassing you, just ignore it.

If you're getting tons of flames from tons of different people...then...well...What ARE you doing? If the answer is something like "slash/porn/fetishes posted in a public place," you should know what you signed up for by putting something most of the world thinks is weird or bad where everyone can see.

Honestly? When they're about your story then what the fuck ever, since most flames are just some version of "you didn't write the story I wanted to read."

But when they're about you or your life or your relationships and things you did and said and stuff like that? It's really difficult to walk away.

I was assuming the OP was talking about the fic kind, as the secret seemed to be about writing.

Even the personal type though...if you gave complete strangers enough information to attack you in a very personal way that hurts that much, you're probably telling the public too much.

Yeah, it's really annoying. I've been accused of flaming before when I left a very critical review of a fan fic. I guess the whole "Do unto others" doesn't always work. I so wish I could get more constructive criticism on my stories.

Dunno about writers, but DAMN lots of artists are like that. Especially the deviantart crowd. Part of the reason why barely anyone bothers to critique each other anymore is people just hide the criticism with the comment hiding feature and block the person.

Yeah, that happened to me on ff.net. I left constructive criticism about the pacing of the story and offered suggestions (while saying the writing was good!) and the author got all butthurt and sent me this message saying she hopes I don't leave reviews like that for other people then proceeded to block me from responding or reviewing any of her other fics.

And so much agreement on the deviantart crowd.

I hate the people who leave harsh concrit when the writer clearly doesn't want it. I'm not a writer, but I always find it annoying and self-righteous when people whine about their concrit being badly received.

Ha, touché. I agree though. If someone didn't ask for it then there's no need to be harsh (I only leave it for those who ask and I rarely leave it in any case).
