No, I'm responding to the OP, who is insulting those for having a *~deep thought~* after seeing a movie, rather than arriving at it "independently."

It's not entertaining the thought that I'm critiquing; it's feeling superior for it.

I do love you for putting 'independently' in quotes. I tend to roll my eyes at anyone who thinks they're smart for arriving at solipsism 'independently' because fiction is so saturated in that idea, explicit or implicit (Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz...), that I don't think anyone can claim they 'independently' thought it up even if it wasn't sparked by any specific piece of media.

Even if we thought that was once true, how can we now given the saturation of media and our growing up in global communications? And why do we try to hold on so dearly to the notion? Derivative doesn't have to be a bad word. Or, rather, we can still be products of histories and the societies in which we find ourselves without being reduced to derivative nonthinkers.

It's like, so you didn't think of that idea first or independently. That's fine. What are you going to do with the idea now? That's what interests me.

In other words: word. :)

And if it's a thought you had when you were still reading Dick and Jane...?

It's not THAT complex an idea, christ.

Well, I guess that's okay then.
