Notes:

Unfortunately a panfandom kink meme would be impossible to keep organized, since there are so many possible fandoms to choose from. But since lots of people seem to want some kind of meme: FS anon meme tomorrow?

Find a better site to post your work on. DA sucks. It's full of viruses and stuff that's traced or stolen from pixiv.

DeviantART's community isn't exactly the best judge of talent, given the gigantic amount of generic sparkly-eyed animu garbage that gets featured every day. The majority of people who comment don't know how to give decent critique anyway, so you're not really missing much.

Not the OP, but have any other art site suggestions? I definitely face the same issue the OP does.

Try CGHub or ConceptArt? Although the latter is kind of biased in its own way.

All web communities are going to have their pros and cons, it really depends on what you're looking for. You shouldn't really judge devart as one monotonous community, either. There are tons of different "circles" people run in in the site. An iconist is going to be part of a different group and have a different experience than a fanartist, than a sci-fi artist, etc. You can easily avoid most anime/anthro/fanart/whatever is annoying you if you immerse yourself in certain parts of the site. You can find circles that are very centered on critique and have similar scorn for generic anime, or whatever. As I said, it really depends on what you want.

dA views is not so much an indicator of talent. It's more like...which groups of people are going to sit together at a lunch table. You're going to have the big-eyed kawaii anime people table, the rainbow-vomit explosion sparkledog table, the Sonic OC inflation fetish table, etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is, "art" at dA attracts people for the wrong reasons and you shouldn't let that get to you.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DA views and amount of comments is not a sign of talent. It's a popularity contest, so the popular stuff gets to the front page, unfortunately.

FFS, a stamp using a popular anime screenshot can get over 3000 favourites.

Don't let that get to you.

Considering a huge chunk of dA is full of blind fanbrats (can't recognize tracing, art theft, bad art, etc)... you shouldn't get too worked up about it.

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I feel deja vu from yesterday...

dA is a networking site centered around art. Networking will always be one of the most important aspects. People are there to look for things they like, and will lower their sense of criticism if the picture is of something they like. Never will it be easier to become popular through original, nonsexualized artworks than it is through fan art, humor, sexualized -whatever-, and other "shortcuts" to popularity, because those types of artworks are automatically part of networks. People search for Naruto, for sexy girls, for funny comics. They can only find your originally anatomically correct artworks if you put them out there. Even when you do, they won't catch people's eyes as quickly as the things they are interested in before ever clicking the thumbnail.

So if you want to compare your art to anything, compare it to other art of your subject matter and skill level, with artists of your networking skill level. Comparing it to fan art of popular fandoms or hot nude chicks is only going to tell you that your art isn't as popular as that popular fandom and isn't immediately appealing to horny people---not exactly a problem unless that is what you were going for.

A storyboard artist once said that you draw your best stuff quickly.
