In the audio commentary they said the main reason it was cut was because the test audience of children thought it was boring (while the teen audience got all emotional). But because Disney were aiming it at kids, they cut it.

Sorry to ruin the "love" for this scene but I really just needed to say that, in my opinion, this is the WORST added-in scene in any Disney movie. 8| It ruined the DVD for me.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that song, but it belongs in the credits. Sticking it back in that heart-breaking scene ruined the flow of it and the beauty of their simple "goodbye". Also the freaking animals entering the tent during the song KILLED IT.
(Also, I'm aware this comment is way late ffff.)
