3 or 4 months ago there was an article in Salon.com that basically said out gay actors shouldn't play straight characters because the audience would be thinking about their homosexuality when they were shown in love scenes or something.* And how many gay actors are actually given roles as straight characters?

It's an unfortunate fact that out gay actors face a lot of prejudice in the roles they're given and the critical acclaim (or lack thereof) that they receive.

That was in Newsweek, and it was also met with a shit ton of backlash - both from people in the industry, and people not in it.

And just because some asshat wrote it in a magazine doesn't mean that it isn't homophobic (and a self-hating, self-fulfilling prophecy). It still is.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean that it's true because someone has written it in a magazine. I put the asterisk there and forgot to explain at the bottom that I understand how extremely homophobic that writer's views are. But what that article shows is that there are people who think like this, and some of those people being in positions of power within the industry means less gay actors getting straight roles.
