Notes:

Unfortunately a panfandom kink meme would be impossible to keep organized, since there are so many possible fandoms to choose from. But since lots of people seem to want some kind of meme: FS anon meme tomorrow?

First I LOLed, and then I was like :| because that is a really good point, actually. I was always focused on Buffy's troubles and thought her situation was pretty realistic, but yeah, in retrospect if the writers wanted to give her RL angst and focused on Willow's issues, they could've had Willow try to magic up some money for the house because she felt guilty about freeloading, and then Tara could've either mentioned that their parents give them enough money to pitch in and they could start scrimping a little more, OR Tara could've suggested that they get part-time jobs at the Magic Box or at the university. It would've addressed Buffy's problem, given more proof to Willow's mishandling of magic, and it would've brought up the fact that Willow and Tara were living at the house and had apparently spent all of the money Joyce left behind.

Aaand I have thought way too much about this. IICR, Giles gave Buffy some money, which I did like, but now I sorta wish the whole Willow-Tara angle had been acknowledged.

This, except I have a feeling that Tara did have a job, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to afford school seeing as her family disowned her and obviously didn't want her getting an education.

I could understand shock playing a major part in Willow and Tara's seeming to have spent all Joyce's money; Buffy was gone but they had to pretend she wasn't... Dawn had essentially no family left, and I doubt either of them had any experience dealing with actual finances. Willow couldn't stand Anya, so probably never thought of asking for help...

They basically decided that Buffy coming back woupd solve all their problems, never even realizing that money would STILL be an issue. Stupid, but they were only 19, so it's not terribly surprising. I realllly wish the show had brought this up, your idea was an excellent one.

I've always assumed Tara at least did work study through school which would cut her tuition fees down and provide housing, but wouldn't leave much in her bank account (I did it and took home under $100 a month).

The idea of benevolent parents seems to be unpopular (although I completely see Sheila Rosenberg being supportive enough to keep funding Willow; and you could probably argue that Tara's mum left her some money in secret or in a will so her husband didn't have authority over it).

I've never thought that the girls squandered all of Joyce's money though. Just as I never assumed that they weren't trying to pay for what they could. Sometimes the mortgage doesn't get paid if that means you can keep the electricity on and pancakes in Dawn's belly. I was on my own at 19 and even with some help from my family, I wasn't always able to keep everything paid. *shrugs*

Oh, that would make sense for Tara to already have a job. I had forgotten about what happened at the end of "Family" (I think that's what the ep was called).

I also totally get what you said about shock being a major part in the money-spending. Hell, Dawn acts out by stealing too, so I guess it was sort of a coping mechanism for all three of them, and they didn't realize how much they'd spent until Buffy came back. And what you said about them deciding that Buffy coming back would solve all their problems explains a lot, too, especially in Willow's case because she seemed the most determined to get the spell to work. Them being as young as they are also puts things into further perspective, which is why I suppose Giles had to be written as the 'parent' in that situation.

There might have still been some holes in my idea anyway, heh. But thank you!
