Ahahaa, THANK YOU. I am slightly terrified because, you know, it's SPANDEX and I am not a gymnaist, but SO EXCITED too, omg. I GET TO BE A POWER RANGER AT LAST.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit that you have inspired me to consider being Pink, though I am not as ballsy as you and would probably do one of the less-awesome t-shirt costumes. Because my other option right now is Amanda from Saw, and let's face it, I cannot pull off Amanda. But I think I probably give off a "Pink Power Ranger" vibe to a lot of people. =P

You have no idea how much I wanted to be a Power Ranger as a kid. Or, you know, be friends with the Power Rangers. I wasn't picky.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you and me both. I totally wanted to be a ranger. Either a new color, or a new incarnation. I was always well aware that they didn't have a purple or orange ranger, can I can rock both of those colors, and they didn't have a silver ranger! I was like, PERFECT! LOL Oh man. Glad to know I wasn't the only "way too old" kid out there dreaming about it.

I am a bit terrified of being Billy for Halloween because while I'm relatively fit I'm NOT a gymnaist and am paranoid I will look AWFUL. But I am on a diet, and suddenly understand all those girls who hang bathing suits up on their closet doors to encourage them to work out for the beach. XD I wish I had some local friends who'd costume it with me, but even if they were willing, none of them could afford the ridiculous awesome suit I bought, ahahaha. But I figure if I'm going to go for it, I might as well go ALL THE WAY.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
EL OH EL, are you me? I totally wanted a purple ranger from probably my earliest days as a seven-year-old PR fangirl. Oh, and I wanted Karone to stay Purple for realz instead of being Pink in Lost Galaxy because if I can't be purple at least someone can be?. It suited her better, grr. And there actually was a silver ranger in PRiS! He is Zhane and is hot and funny and awesome and Justin Nimmo is one of the better PRiS actors and I love him.

(I'm actually re-watching MMPR now after being inspired by the David news. Infinite lulz to be had, and also, there are a lot of pretty people in this show, just sayin'. And Billy is still as amazing as I remembered. <3)

I'm a swimmer/coach, so I'm intimately familiar with teh spandex. It's really not that bad, but I might feel this way because I have literally seen tens of thousands of people up close in spandex, and you get desensitized after awhile. You have plenty of time, though. When I actually cared about working out (ha), I definitely saw a difference in a month or two of doing the right things, and as a guy it is easier for you, so!

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I was such a Billy fan that I stopped watching the day he left the show. (Well, maybe a day or two after until I was certain he wasn't coming back.) So I've never seen any of those later seasons or characters, but I'm glad to know there was a purpleish ranger and a silver!

I started rewatching MMPR just a week BEFORE David's interview announcement, so I think that's like serendipitious stuff all the more reason for me to do the costume, ha. I'm taking it slowly though, only about half way through S1. It's hilarious to rewatch it with adult eyes. I can't wait until S2 when the plot actually picks up a bit.

As a swimmer, shouldn't you be fit? DON THE SPANDEX. And then come to California and be my Kimberley.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
(Sorry for long comment is long. I got excited. Also, your icon is cracking me up, first of all.)

Aww, I totally understand that. I was way too far gone for PR in general to give it up (and also I'm pretty sure we watched them grossly out of order, so Billy was there for some episodes and not for others =P). Plus, as soon as I started losing interest, they introduced In Space, and if you want me (especially kid!me) to love something, all you need to do is tack on "... AND DID I MENTION THEY'RE IN SPACE?" (These days it's more "... AND DID I MENTION THEY'RE GAY?", but I still wanna be an astronaut when I grow up.) Ditto for Lost Galaxy. I also watched a bit of Lightspeed Rescue and basically was done after that, but I love all the Dino Thunder stuff with older!Tommy. I have no clue what happened before or after DT and basically watch DT for Tommy, though, so I'm not even tooootally clear what happens in DT. =P

(Tl; dr: yay, Katie loves PR and is inappropriately old.)

No way, that's crazy timing! I agree that watching with adult eyes is a special kind of awesome. I'm probably preaching to the choir, but have you seen [livejournal.com profile] ranger_recaps? It's hilarious commentary on all the episodes and is very aware of all the subtext and values and meta in the show, and it's made of win. For me it's been a great "companion read" to the episodes I'm watching, and they often say exactly what I was thinking.

Ha! I... used to be? xD I was super srs bzns about it until I finished high school, at which point I decided that I liked teaching much better than competing. These days I do enough to avoid looking totally ridic in front of my kids, and swimming isn't really a sport that will give you PR-type muscles, alas. We did a lot of cross-training in my days as a swimmer, though, so I know what will if I decide it's worth it, but oh Bob it is not fun. I would totally be your Kim anyway if I didn't live in NC, though. <3

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the long comment. XD

I'm a little older than you, so I think my Power Ranger experience was possibly a bit different. As much as I loved it, it was a BIG DIRTY DARK SECRET that I was into it. I couldn't tell ANYONE. I was waaaaay too old. I was in junior high when I started watching it, and I was in high school when the movie came out, etc. It was, however, my first internet fandom, lol. If I google hard enough, I can still find old fic I wrote, sobbbb. But I think because it was so unacceptable for me to be into the show, I dropped it as soon as I could. I never liked Tommy back then, so he wasn't enough to keep me watching, and to be honest, he wasn't back on the show when I bailed. I was only watching for David by then. I did like some of the other characters (Rocky and Adam, mostly, as Aisha had left by then), but it just wasn't enough. On the bonus, I did watch them all as they aired in order. I missed most of the first season, as I didn't get into it until S2, but I caught up on most of that later, and the plot didn't really pick up until S2 anyway.

As I said, I was hugely into MMPR fandom back in the day (I mean, I remember spending ~hours~ on the MMPR movie website when it went up. What was that, 1996? ~Old~), but I never really followed it much after I stopped watching. I'd throw Yost's name into Google on occasion to see what he was up to (I could never find anything!), but that's about it. So I haven't seen that recap page, or anything. I started rewatching the series because a friend (who didn't watch it originally) started watching it because of Linkara's nostalgia reviews (haven't seen those, either!), but maybe I should. I know I keep cracking up at what I'm seeing, the jokes I didn't get, and the things that I'd ship now versus what I shipped back then. (Re: your icon, I was a pretty hardcore Billy/Kim unrquited shipper. Which probably added to my dislike of Tommy, though I thought, and still think, that Tommy was a total tool. Now I just feel justified.)

I don't intend to have PR type muscles, I just don't want rolls of flab to be visible through my spandex, ahahaha. No guarantees on that, though. Anyway, I haven't posted anything about MMPR on my journal (old habits die hard, and I'm still a little embarrassed), but maybe I should friend you. You seem awesomesauce and maybe I'd be less afraid of posting stuff about it if I know at least one person would give a hoot. XD

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
*clings to you* This is awesome and you are win!

Oh, I think I might have a little experience with your situation, actually. I didn't quite give up PR when it was cool to give it up (old habits, they die hard, and also, like I said "and did we mention SPACE" pulled me way, way in). And this was before it was old enough to be nostalgic and before I was old enough to rock all of my crazy fandom over-thinking without caring what anyone thought, so there was a bit of dark dirty secret-ing on my end, too. I think I must have been in early middle school when Space came out? Yeah, it was definitely past time for me to have moved on, but then I met Andros my favorite angst-muffin, and it was downhill from there. I actually recommend Space wholeheartedly; I still think it had the best story and the most cohesive plot of the PR series and is way underrated.

You really should check out Ranger Recaps! They're really smart people who are excellent, insightful commentators, and they almost always put me in a great mood (except when the material becomes rage-inducing, in which case they make me rage with them). Ships, oh lord, I think during my MMPR days I was too young to understand shipping or the fact that Sometimes Canon Is Wrong (this is now my Rule #1 of fandom, heh), but I had a few PRiS canon!ships. As an adult re-watching, I don't have any MMPR ships that I'm rabid about, weirdly enough. I could see a bunch of different possibilities and don't have any huge leanings to one or the other (though Billy/everyone is a popular option ;)).

HA, funny enough I've been posting lately in my journal WTFing at how my opinion of Tommy has been totally 180'd (my feelings as a kid ranged from care-too-little-to-bother-disliking to hatred). But the direction they took with his character in DT made so much more sense and changed everything about how I look at his MMPR/Zeo/etc self, and I'm still working though how I feel about it and maybe writing fic and yeah.

I would love to be friends and squee with you!

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahah, yay~

As I catch up with PR, perhaps I'll keep watching this time. The episodes are so easy to get through. I mean, it's like 15 mins of actual character interaction, and 10 of Zord battles, which you can generally watch with one eye while you do something else in another window.

I think the funny thing now is that, as an adult, I honestly don't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks of me. If I'm embarrassed about something, that is generally a reason for me to talk about it MORE just as a general FUCK YOU AND YOUR SOCIALLY CORRECT BOXES. I REFUSE TO PLAY THIS GAME. So I think while some of it is embarrassing, some of it also just that I don't update LJ as much as I used to. I've mentioned I started rewatching MMPR to all my local friends, for instance and some people via Twitter or AIM. I just haven't updated FB about it. Which is shocking, really. I totally intended to at least post a thing about David Yost coming out (I did to Twitter and FB), but I just haven't on LJ yet. Fail me.

I wasn't a rabid Billy/Kim shipper, but they were the two I shipped as a kid. It was mostly of a "HE DESERVES HER" sort of way though, which isn't very logical. It's just he was my favorite and I wanted him to have everything he deserved and I thought he deserved the Hot Chick. I can see Billy/Everyone now, though, and I suspect I'll start seeing Billy/Adam when I get back to them. I was pretty much too young the first time around to realize I could ship two guys, but the way I viewed their relationship, even as a kid, was closer than BFFs, so.

I'm not opposed to revising my views on Tommy, though it'll probably hard for me in lieu of JDF's general douchey self. I'm often pretty good about seperating characters from actors, but I'm not sure it'll be possible this time around. We'll see.

Have friended you. :D

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's like 15 mins of actual character interaction, and 10 of Zord battles, which you can generally watch with one eye while you do something else in another window.

This is pretty much how I watch them, ha! *checks* "Oh, whoops, they're still fighting in Zords, back to Oregon Trail."

I've been spamming Facebook with PR updates lately, so no shame, me. And I'm actually a grad student with a not-at-all-secret love of science nerds, so my friends don't think it's all that weird that I have crushes on Billy and future!Tommy. (They probably think it's weird that I have crushes at all, since I rarely talk about that stuff because I tend to get crushes on characters and can't really relate to their "omgzz {insert actor here} is so hawtz0rs." For awhile I was sure I was doing it wrong. ;)) And ooo, Billy/Adam, I like it. Adam is so adorable. I underrated him to shameful levels as a kid, I'm realizing now.

Ugh, though, I hear you on the difficulties with actors being dbags. It usually doesn't bother me much, but PR is such a representation of all that was good and innocent about my childhood that I just can't stand to have it tainted in any way, you know? At this point I'm telling myself, look, Katie, he was nineteen, it was 1993, there were adults modeling bad behavior all around him, and you did/said some stupid, mean shit when you were nineteen that you wouldn't want on video. I'd demand better from Tommy, but JDF is not Tommy or a superhero, and given the circumstances we're kinda expecting him to be, and I'm trying to be fair. (Funny how it's so easy for me to say things like this defending, say, Miley, but it's so hard for my childhood heroes. I just want them to be the perfect role models their characters were supposed to be. Sigh.)

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
JDF has the uh, unfortunate flaw of having had his douchery related directly to my favorite character over a topic that's very dear to me. If he'd, on the other hand, been sleeping around, doing drugs and getting pulled over for reckless driving, or other unsuperhero-like things that didn't involve being a homophobic jerk to the actor of my favorite character, I'd probably be more willing to let it slide. A nineteen year old with sudden fame and celebrity status being a jerk is not a surprise. It's the homophobia that really grates on me. I mean, I never liked Tommy as a kid, but I didn't hate him. i don't know that I hate Tommy (or JDF) now, but I know it breaks my heart to think about this punk nineteen-year-old treating David like shit and helping to perpetuate this horrible atmosphere at work.

Even if gay people aren't allowed to be superheroes (WHICH IS TOTALLY BULLSHIT), superheroes should ACCEPT EVERYONE and make a POINT to say that gay people are just as good and right and acceptable as straight people. Aaaugh, rage hulk smash. So we'll see how I handle that. If only they'd hated each other over professional acting differences or something. I think that would go for me with anything. If JDF was just pulling jerk pranks, I'd be like HE WAS NINETEEN. But he was being a homophobic douche, and I can't forgive that. I can forgive a lot of stuff, but that's one of the ones I can't, and unless he someday publically and sincerely apologizes to David Yost (and genuinely looks like he means it), I'll probably never be able to forgive him, even if David has. (There's no doubt in my mind that David's a better man than me.)

Poor Adam. I was biased a bit, because I adored Zack, but I really did warm up to Adam pretty fast. I liked Rocky and Aisha too, but I really liked Adam. Though I have to admit in retrospect that I like Jason a lot more now than I did as a kid. I didn't DISlike Jason, I just sort of viewed him as "blah." He didn't interest me in any shape or form. I thought he was totally fake and uninteresting, like a cardboard cutout. I still think he's a bit fake and cardboardy, but I enjoy him a lot more now. I think it helps having watched the show from the beginning in order this time. When I got into the show, he was already being massively overshadowed by Tommy. Where I am right now, Jason is the obvious leader and Tommy is usually only in half of the episode, so Jason gets a lot more room to shine. (Also, I'm sort of shipping Jason/Zack, which I so never did as a kid.)

I have some characters, BTW, where the crush is only on the character and some where the crush extends to the actors. I think mine for Billy is Billy only, but I've also not had a chance to watch Yost in anything else. If after PR he'd gone on to some other show, say something like playing Xander on Buffy, maybe I would have grown to like him more. It's just impossible to say. As it was, after PR, Yost really disappeared so all I had was Billy.
