But please don't judge a show by its fans, or a number of fans by the show. Besides, Sherlock is one of the BEST fandoms out there right now, relax and have fun.

Share the love for the originals then with the noobs! A lot of people got into Star Trek via STXI, and then fell in love with TOS and were embraced into the Trek family. I got into Sherlock via BBC, and I've been eagerly talking to longtime fans who have been pointing me to some of the awesome earlier stuff. Mysteries were never my thing over sci-fi adventures, but Sherlock BBC caught my eye, and I'm so glad it did! Try to be more open and give us the gospel, rather than pushing us away.

I've been accused of this a few times after joining the Sherlock BBC fandom. I'm passionate about the show, and I think people assume that this means it is the only Holmes-related thing I know anything about. I started reading the stories when I was a kid. I've seen a number of adaptations. I wish people would stop assuming that I haven't just because I prefer this series.

As a lover of all Sherlock adaptations, I think it's ridiculous to allow new fans to ruin your enjoyment of your fandom based purely on the fact that they are new. Many fans are using Sherlock as a gateway to all things Holmesian. Perhaps you should be so quick to judge and give the newbies a chance. Or, better yet, enlighten them as to the wealth of wonderful stories and adaptations already in Sherlock Holmes canon.

I really think Sherlock Holmes fandom would be better if we stopped treating it like one fandom, and agreed to divide it up into several fandoms, one for each adaptation, and one for the original canon. Because there really isn't anything saying that because you have and interest and like for one adaptation, or the original novels, you're going to like all of it. It's rather unlikely, considering they're all so different from each other.

I think a lot of the hate stems from insecurity of not knowing one/some of the other versions enough. There is this feeling that you need to be updated on all the versions, to be a real fan or whatever, and that is near impossible. Can't we start treating it like different fandoms instead?

(And in that way I can stay clear of everything Sherlock Holmes 2009 movie, which wasn't to my tastes at all. You can't love all of it.)

The thing is, though, some of us are just interested in the one adaptation. This is the only form of Sherlock I've ever watched/read, and I love it; if someone asks I'll say I'm a fan of the show rather than of Sherlock Holmes in general. As of yet I don't have the time or desire to really check out any of the other versions, but I'm not hurting you or yelling my opinions all over Sherlock fandom (BBC or not). :c

I think this may have stopped making sense pretty quickly.

Saying that my friends who only like Sherlock and don't care about the canon annoy me. I hate feeling elitist or whatever; I just wish that they would pick up a book. Even just to help them see the similarities and differences between Sherlock and the canon.

I don't hate the series -- I consider it a great impetus to a lot of people to go on and read the stories, watch other adaptations, etc., and if it doesn't catch them all, that's okay. It ain't Pokemon.

Eh, don't let something like that get to you. If anything, it might make some more interested in the canon. Isn't that always good? Sometimes it takes a new perspective on a series like this to get people interested. And if they aren't interested in the books and such, that's fine, too. /shrug

I liked the traditional Sherlock Holmes and I've seen most of the adaptions (except for 2009 movie). I've read the books. But I gotta say, I'm one of the fans you hate, because it wasn't until the BBC Sherlock version that I felt driven to obsessively read fanfic for it.

The BBC version is different. It's a genuinely AU. It's brought a lot of new ideas into the canon that just simply don't exist and can't exist in any other version.
