I think this secret is a huge exagguration, but not totally without grounds. There was an episode where at the end, he said his next ploy was going to the amnesia ward with a bunch of flowers and pictures of some kids, and pretending to be someone's husband, to have sex with her. That would be rape, making an amnesiac think you're their husband.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were others. Getting women so drunk they don't know what they're doing is a Barney tactic, after all.

personally (and i'm a huge fan of the show, and of Barney, so if I'm biased, it's in his favor :P lol) I see his characterization as someone who *might* do some things that could technically be considered rape -- like for example, taking advantage of a woman who's had too much to drink to be able to consent, etc -- but I can't recall any instance in the show itself when he's actually *done* that... he *does* get women drunk, but that in itself does not constitute rape...

He's talked about doing thing that would be rape (see my comment above, pretending to be an amnesiac's husband). I can't think of any instance where they've showed him doing anything that would be rape. I don't know the show super well, that example just stuck in my head because it made me WTF at the time. Getting someone drunk and having sex with them is, in fact, legally rape. Having sex with someone who can't consent (because they are incapacitated or their reasoning is impaired) is considered rape in many places.

If being kinda sleazy and lying in order to get into someone's pants constituted rape the prisons would be full.

Also, this kind of thing undermines the use of the word a little. I don't recall Barney ever drugging anyone or forcing himself on anyone, or even ever with a girl (on screen) who didn't seem willing or even eager to be with him. They might have regretted it later, but that doesn't make it rape.

You can find misogynistic character funny, you know. Humour doesn't have detractors like morals. It always perplexes me when people are angry at the characters for rape/misogyny/racism etc. The character, by definition, has no chance of changing their opinions, and comedy characters especially are completely skewed in terms of sensible characterisation.

If you want to get angry about how this portrays "rape" or something in a positive light, then get angry at the writers that have written him. You can enjoy the character for being a caricature.

I'd also like to add that, since he's a character in a comedy, we are not suppose to take him seriously. I don't see anyone saying, "wow, he has the right idea about how to treat women!" We don't laugh at just what he does but laugh at him for being so pathetic to do it. None of it is to be taken seriously.

Of course, it wouldn't occur to anyone that Barney is talking shit to pad his own notched bedpost when he tells those stories. Because you see him lie to women and try a multitude of sleazy pickup tactics, but I'm up through season 4 and not once have I seen him get a girl drunk or force her into sex.

I mean, why would he exaggerate? It's not like comedy comes from that. Or that this show is a comedy. Oh, wait-
