This seems to be only referring to the anime. The anime is a pretty bad adaption of the manga. Read the manga. The characters come across much more natural and there's no moral of the week or whatever the anime has.

Ah, I had no idea that the anime was considered a bad adaptation. This gives me hope (though it still doesn't help me understand why the anime itself is so heavily praised). I'll certainly try the manga, thanks!

Well I don't know if I speak for the whole fandom. It is rather small. This is probably the second F!S I've seen about Aria in the year I've been following this. I don't really know how other people have responded to it.

BUT personally, I believe everything just works better in the manga. The art is so much prettier without those bubblegum colors blinding everything and everything is far less... fake-y.

Surprised I'm not the first to reply to this!

But as einasketch said, the anime is a pretty bad adaptation. I couldn't bring myself watch it, to be honest... the manga is just wonderful, and I'm happy with it on its own. It certainly didn't have a moral of the week, it was more of a slice-of-life-in-the-far-future thing.

Got it, and thanks - I'd never heard complaints about the anime adaptation before, so I hadn't thought to give the manga a chance. I will now, though!

Whaaaat is YKK? I'm wracking my brain here, and all I can think of are zippers.

I haven't read the manga so I can't compare like the above two posters, but I still loved the ARIA series. However, Akari's end of episode "moral of the week" emails to Ai were pretty unneeded. The viewer doesn't need everything spelled out for them. Apparently Ai was an anime-only character (supposedly the mangaka added her in to the manga near the very end? Or something?) so I take it the manga probably wasn't so willing to constantly hit you over the head.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. It's an amazing series -- please take the time to read more about it, you won't regret it!

Ahh. Well, I just took a look at the synopsis for it on MAL, and the first couple lines made me instantly think of Kokoro Library (minus the robot thing), which is somewhat unfortunate, since even a lover of sloooow shows where not much happens like me found watching that show more a chore than anything else. Still, I have heard people say good things about Yokohama (unlike Kokoro Library, which I've never seen people recommend), so I'm sure it's at least worth checking out one of these days.

If it helps, YKK is an OAV (well, two of them, with two eps each - I prefer the earlier one over the 2005 one, but YMMV), so if nothing else it'll be a smaller time investment!

urgh. I don't like Ai. In the manga, Akari writes to someone who's never named, like she's writing to the reader rather than some offscreen character. Morals aren't discussed and it just feels a lot more personal, I guess.
