I love their relationship as well! So many could have beens. But maybe that's why it's not really popular? They could have worked together, but they never did, and they had nearly zero contact. It's near impossible to whisk the ship into canon, in very few scenarios. Plus, I think people generally don't like Near as much as the other characters, even though he's my favorite D: And this is the only pairing I ship in this series. *sigh* IF ONLY.

1, They grew up in the same orphanage, and possibly spent years around each other.
2. A lot of stuff could have happened during the fire year time skip. Unless it's explicitly mentioned they had no contact with each other during that time? I don't recall.

I hear you about Near. He's one of my fave characters in DN. (-:

I'm aware of their little screentime, but what they have was enough for me to consider them one of my biggest OTP's. :)
And, funny thing, this is one of the ships that I believe it had a bad case of the platonical relationship. Near loved Mello, but didn't knew how to express it, Mello loved him but tried to run away of it, so nothing, in my mind actually happened. It was just a possibility that got lost in the circunstances. :)

... how is that not a popular ship? It definitely rivals Matt/Mello, and only Light/L is more popular than that. Even a good chunk of Matt/Mello has implied Mello/Near, one-sided or not.

I mean, is the fandom dead, or something? Time was you couldn't spit without hitting a Mello/Near fic.

That's beautifully put, OP, and they'll always be my favourite relationship in Death Note. Whether you see them as rivals, reluctant allies, or a potential pairing, it'll always be filled with friction and interesting. They would have made a fascinating (if dysfunctional XD) team and it's sad that Near was the only one who recognized that (and, let's be honest, that he wasn't all that great at communicating it). Despite Mello's intense rage-on for Near, I think they'll always be close, in a way. After all they were probably the only two people in the world who could understand the very peculiar situation they were raised and living in. Wammy alumni surely were destined to lead somewhat lonely, paranoid lives. The thought that they could have potentially shared that is tragic and kinda heartbreaking.

Also, I keep hearing that Near isn't that popular, but I always felt that his nastiness was part of his appeal. He could be extremely funny at times, and I loved the mean-spirited way he tore into Light.

I agree so hard with what you said here, dear. And even Mello's rage (as having a similar personality myself) always seemed to be full of... resentment. Like he liked Near himself, but Near never knew how to express that he also liked him, so he just felt angry started to, I don't knowm, corrupt the feeling inside him.

About Near, I'm a little bit partial about him, because for me, he seemed to be one of the most genuine and charismatic characters in the series. :)

The first time I read the manga I was watching the movie at the same time. Naturally I finished the movie first so when L finally did die, I was heartbroken. Then this Near kid showed up and I was just annoyed that he was trying to replace L. Reading it again I don't have the same hatred for him I did back then.

Because the BNF of the pairing is an idiotic, insufferable racist weaboo who keeps bitching whenever someone DARES to write precious wee 'Nia-tan' as seme or 'Mero-kun' as anything other than the big, perfect seme.

It's what drove ME out of the fandom and the pairing, and Near used to be my favorite character.

I'm so sorry about this, anon. I'm not, in any way, close to the Death Note fandom, what I know is what I saw in f!secrets and things like this, so makes me quite sad that one of my OTP's has such a person as a BNF. They deserve so much more. :)
