I was going to try to get into the Metroid series with this game. Because I don't get games without doing research, I can tell you-

Not exactly an unpopular opinion, I'm not into Metroid myself but I've heard people complain who usually pay no attention to characterization whatsoever. They must've screwed it hard if those kind of gamers noticed too! Apparently, Samus' creator thinks that Samus is a wimp.

Also, I am disappoint since I just discovered that Samus is a girl for shock value alone - as opposed to, you know, the idea that having a girl protagonist may be a positive thing. The revelation wasn't totally unexpected, but still. Disappoint. =/

My boyfriend was so excited about this game and preordered it but I couldn't stand to sit next to him while he played. She's just so freaking emo. Everything. cuts. her. like. a... knife. (heavy sigh)

I was thrilled when watching XPlay and saw they tore the game a new one, Morgan literally saying "way to ruin a franchise."

Boyfriend insists all this emo-ness lines up with a comic he read in Nintendo Power in 1996 so it's not new that Samus is a hot mess. But to me, it ruins the portrayal of a asskicking bounty hunter (regardless of gender).

I think a lot of people found that they really screwed the pooch on this one. I mean before Metroid was like "Hey here's this badass bounty hunter goin around shootin shit and just generally being awesome SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER IT'S A GIRL"

Now it's like "baaw baaaw baaaw it's a girl and occasionally she does some pretty cool things I guess"

Samus used to be my favorite character of all time. I wasn't happy with the way she was turning into a sex object with the Zero Suit, but I could deal, she was still a BAMF. Then I read about how she's portrayed this game and I just...it kills my soul. So much.

I, um, actually like what they've done with her. It gives her more dimensions than a badass with a gun and from my POV, it doesn't take away from her badassedness. (Zebes is still in pieces, isn't it? Her emotions haven't retconned that? 'xactly.) It shows greater courage to be afraid and overcome that fear than to not be afraid at all.

...having said that, what the fuck were Team Ninja thinking, giving her ridiculous heels like that? I don't mind the boobs, the more feminized suit, the beauty mark, or anything else the fandom seems to have latched onto as their reason for declaring Metroid RUINED FOREVER...those Zero Suit heels are too fucking impractical, and it's not like she needs them anyway.

Yes, yes, THIS so freaking much! And apparently her panicking at Ridley is an accurate depiction of PTSD, so more power to the writers for actually putting some realism in a video game.

And I didn't really notice the heels, was a bit too busy running for my life for the short section we got to play in the Zero Suit.

But why does manga characterization (which from the sound of it most players haven't read) trump the characterization from all the other games, where she'd faced Ridley over and over again without crying and panicking? And yes, she was taking orders in Fusion, but she didn't lack confidence in her ability to do so.

In fact, I was much happier with Fusion, which I felt gave her character more depth and dimension without playing up "oh but she's a girl". I wish Other M could have gone in that direction?

The manga doesn't trump any characterization, but it is canon as confirmed by Nintendo and the developers of the games. Thus, it should be considered as canon when one discusses the series.

That said, I have no idea when it's mentioned in this context when Other M contradicts the manga on several accounts. It screws over everything we've known about Malkovich until now - Adam's last appearance in the manga is an epic final stand, while Samus in Fusion reminisces of him as a long-dead friend. In addition, there is an eerie lack of alien Federation members in Other M; all other versions of the canon portray a very multi-racial Federation.

There is also that thing where the manga is set before Zero Mission. Implying that her personality should be the same in it and Other M is like saying that Zero Mission, Metroid II, Prime Trilogy, Hunters and Super Metroid never happened, and so Samus never went through a lick of character development while saving the galaxy a good six-seven times.

The manga's Samus is, in fact, very similar to her portrayal in Fusion. This would be because it was written as a promotional material to Fusion and the mangaka worked very closely with the game's developers.

God damnit. And here I actually wanted to play this game. Samus showing some real fear is fine (even though it's a bit hokey wrt Ridley, since she has kicked his ass so many times) but the need of rescue thing is just unforgivable. Nobody rescued my ass in Super Metroid, and there was some creepy shit in that game.

Which is to say I will absolutely forgive it the next time I see Marcus Fenix, the Master Chief, Big Boss, Elliot Salem, or Soap MacTavish cowering and weeping in fear until a woman comes to rescue them. Until then it's sexist bunk.

This is exactly my problem with Other M. All other things being equal, yeah, it'd be nice for Samus to be more fleshed out as a character, but male characters in the same genre never get shown crying or cowering or even fearing anything, and if they do show fear or trauma it's the quiet, acceptable "masculine" demonstration of trauma - they don't lose their will or ability to fight. And we've never even seen MAster Cheif's face - you think any game would have him parading around in a skintight Zero Suit? Fuck no. And that's what incenses me so much about what's been done to Samus these past few years. It's just forcing her back into line with what girls are "allowed" to do and behave like when she used to be one of the few exceptions out there.

I could not agree more. I'm sure many people would say that the characterization of the men listed is unrealistic (and I'm not entirely sure they'd be right about that, they should really read Bravo Two Zero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bravo_Two_Zero_%281993_book%29) and In the Company of Heroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Company_of_Heroes) and re-evaluate as said portrayal of battle-hardened soldiers is more realistic than I think they realize) and that it's good that Samus is a more approachable human being, but it's still smacks one in the face that only the girl gets to be like this. It is was a guy weeping and needing rescue, we wouldn't like it at all.

In fact, I find it more heartening than I can really express that we are not okay with this from "the girl" either, for the most part, because I think not so long ago that would have been fine. She's a girl, of course she cries and needs to be rescued. No she's a kickass badass mercenary, she doesn't cry and need to be rescued.

(Related not to the discussion but to your comment: we actually did get to see the Master Chief's face. He was - and here's a shocker - a generically handsome, tall, brown-haired, blue-eyed white dude. I was pissed, and so were a lot of other people; he went from the Everyman Hero who could be however the player saw him, to Yet Another Fucking FPS Stereotype. At least Big Boss gets his ass kicked by a woman, Salem's short (and probably gay), and Soap's a foreigner.)

I am not in the Metroid fandom nor have I played the series, but I have friends who do. It's a highly debated game to say the least. There are some people, from what I've gathered, that do sympathize with her more. But there seem to be three times more people who are appalled at what the game has done to her character. That is the most debated, but there are even more things that are debated like the gameplay, voice acting, writing, and plot. It's all a mess.
