If the visuals weren't important, it wouldn't have them at all. Watchmen had additional written content, too, but at its core it's still a comic book.

I didn't bring up HINABN, but since you did-- yes, that comic is terribly written and stupidly gorgeous. I want more than anything for Tessa to get a writer so that the quality of the writing would match the quality of the artwork. But I didn't start reading it because the paint-by-numbers plotline sounded interesting-- I started reading it for the pretty. I got intrigued because the artwork was appealing.

But in order for a comic to intrigue someone, the art has to appeal to them on some level. Some people can look past MSPA's art, and some people find it charming. I just don't see why not liking the artwork isn't a viable excuse for not wanting to read something. iF sHakEsPeaRe WaS WrItTeN lIke ThIs, I wOuLdN't ReAd It, No MaTtEr HoW gOoD iT wAs.

I just would like to know when it stopped being okay for using a comic's art as the basis for not wanting to read it, or any other comic out there.

It never stopped for me, I said in my post that it's fine if people decide not to read it because of the art! I also started reading HINABN because of the artwork, but dropped it because everything else was lackluster. Obviously you place a higher priority on art than I do, since I much prefer wordplay and characterisation than good art. I guess for me the art in MSPA is more like the punctuation in a Cormac McCarthy book; a stylistic choice that some people might find annoying and confusing, but if you like it it becomes part of the experience of the book and if you don't like it, there's still a story you might like beneath the 'veneer' of writing style. For your Shakespeare example, I would probably still read it if I really liked Shakespeare; otherwise I could get a 'translated' version with normal text which is kinda analogous to the reams of different styles of fanart for MSPA. I also honestly disliked the art in Watchmen but it's still one of my favourite things!

Anyway, wall of text over. Again, I totally don't have a problem with anyone disliking it because of the art, but I do like discussing people's reactions to it and why they like/dislike it :B

Oh, I actually find the art quite charming is MSPA. I just got bored with the comic around 5 Acts in. The common opinion is that it 'gets good after Act 1', and I don't really feel that it did. Certainly didn't get worse, just not... more interesting. I may swing by again later, but the internet's insistence that it's amazing when I've read a decent chunk and still disagree bothers me. It seems like a lot of fans (at least the vocal ones here, can't talk for the rest of the 'net) attribute people's dislike solely because of the artwork. This is not my case, and even if it was, I just... don't see why that matters if that is the case?

Nothing to add except to say this - the art made me look at MSPA. The story did not make me stay.

The art is pretty good, even if deliberately simple. It's really very charming, and it should be obvious that the artist knows what they're doing. I still couldn't get into the story. Whatev - that doesn't mean others won't enjoy the story.

Though I also think the very, very cool looking trolls did pull in more readers. Art matters if it isn't pure writing.
