I don't think you need to have watched them to be a fan. :) I just started the show this year, and I was kind of nervous about watching the old series because I didn't think I'd like it as much. I have watched a few episodes, though, and I really do like them! But it would be silly to feel you *have* to.

Don't worry OP, you're a fan when you decide you like the show and want to watch more of it, no matter what season or series you start with. Otherwise, where would it end? Would the truest fans be those who have seen every episode? Well, that's technically impossible without a time machine, so... actually yeah those would be pretty damn true fans.

You've got 30-40 years of show to get through - just enjoy it!

Also, depending on where you live, this (http://thisweekindoctorwho.blogspot.com/) may or may not be helpful. Because even with libraries and rentals and the Internet, there's a lot to be said for the laziest way.

W'evs, OP. It's only complete assholes who declare standards for what is and is not enough time spent on an intellectual property to call oneself a "fan". Not to mention that Classic Who really IS a completely different animal from New Who. There are plenty of fandomy instances where a show has gone through dramatic changes in its latter seasons and people who dislike those changes call themselves "true fans" or whatever. Why can't this happen the other way around? It's you who gets to label yourself, so stop with the guilt and just enjoy whatever media you enjoy!

Start your Classic viewing with Four's The Key to Time season. That's what I did and it was fantastic. I especially loved 'The Androids of Tara' and 'The Pirate Planet.'

You don't even have to watch them in order (I honestly don't believe that anyone ever has watched all of the Who episodes in order on the first go), practically all of them are online if you're poor & unscrupulous, & they're just... brilliant, really.
