DA. Writing is fickle; you're always going to have some hits and some misses when it comes to engaging readers in your fandom. Building up a reputation helps, but unless you've got some kind of BNF status people aren't going to give you comments simply because they've done so in the past. It hurts, especially when you really needed feedback on something, but it's probably never going to change.

Anon, have you tried posting on lj as well/instead? Or another archive?

I do agree with the above comments that not only ff.net, but writing itself is pretty fickle in terms of readership. I've found the lj-based fandom communities in general to be pretty fantastic, though, in terms of getting discussion and feedback - but BBC Sherlock's one blows them all out of the water. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who would be willing to read-over your work and give you constructive feedback.

Having lost several stories because of computer-crashes and disappearing archives, I just use FF.net as a place of storage with added bonus of reviews.

Well if you use it as an archive it's fine, what I don't get is people posting it there wishing it would be taken seriously.

I think that is unfair. I don't find it fickle at all and in other fandoms i have had many reliable reviewers.
I just wish people wouldn't look down on me for posting there, Lj is scary! It just seems to hold a lot more weight if your post goes ignored in a comm. On ff i can post from a slightly more distant perspective.

I'm not looking down on anyone for posting there. There's just been so many examples of writers complaining that they never seem to feel happy about their works when they post at ff.net. 5 years ago, perhaps it was a different story (as I had posted there then and gotten great reviews and constructive crit) but now, if you want your works to be read, appreciated and receive actual criticism to improve your writing, you either post to LJ, Dreamwidth or other websites. Great writers moved on from ff.net, and along with them, they took their readers too (readers who actually aren't afraid to leave crit and aren't too lazy to comment). I'm not saying that all the remainder of people who still read and post there are horrible, but if you're searching for quality fic and quality reviews, ff.net is the last place to look.

But yeah, sadly, writing is generally fickle. Which is why you need to build your writing reputation in a place people actually go to.
