I was unaware that it was the duty of successful/famous women to "do something positive" for all women. I'll keep that in mind.

^ this - are male celebs required to do something positive for men in general?

On the other hand, one could read the two sentences in the secret as partially separate issues - 'i hate you' as a fact independent of 'you do nothing for women', not solely caused by it? May as well be generous, OP is likely in ventmode rather than debatemode.

no, but it doesn't stop some celebs from trying

My thoughts exactly.

This.

lol ikr

Seems like a weak last-ditch excuse to legitimize hating on someone tbh

Granted, one's personal opinion on a celeb shouldn't have to be legitimized, but it helps if (general) you aren't spouting a justification as overused and as a result meaningless as the "Mary Sue" argument on fictional characters (unless said character actually is a Mary Sue, but more often than not, this is not the case)

I also hate it when people expect popular musicians and/or celebrities (mostly teenage/younger ones that appeal to a young audience) to be "good role models" when they should not be expected to. Popular music and culture is not indicative of what is moral and shouldn't set that standard, it's merely a personal expression of the artist (either that or marketed to appeal to a wide audience/sell records, and things like sex or violence are appealing to the general public).

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It's like these people have no understanding of the entertainment industry and how it works. I would love to live in a world where an artist could call all the shots and succeed completely on their own terms but the fact is, they still have to make money, and they're going to do what their marketing team tells them (read: what sells).

I'm a little leery of the whole "pop culture should not set moral standards" argument, because I think certain things that the entertainment industry deems marketable and appealing are pushed and exploited regardless of any troubling (I guess, hard to find the right word) messages they might send. However, I think that's something that falls more on the entertainment industry in general than particular artists, and I find it unfair to blame an artist for merely reflecting images/values espoused by pop culture as a whole.

Didn't you know, all women are supposed to be role models for little girls. That is their sole purpose in life.
