I've definitely seen actors who couldn't seem to play straight to save their lives (although had great chemistry with male co-stars playing gay roles), and it definitely made me wonder about them. That doesn't mean I think all gay actors are incapable of playing straight, because I've seen plenty of gay actors pull it off (and straight actors play gay characters).
Similarly, if I noticed that a certain author seemed completely incapable of writing convincing heterosexual romance (but had fantastic gay romances and/or subtext), I might wonder about them. Hell, that's why some people wondered about Jack London. (Strong homoerotic subtext - ever read The Sea-Wolf? it's practically text - shit hetero romance.)
Doesn't mean there aren't plenty of gay authors out there who've written wonderful hetero romances.

The prejudice against actors that aren't as great as others? Uh, okay.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)Why is it an entertainer's portrayal of sexuality in particular that makes you "wonder about them"? Don't you find that problematic?

LMAO, this so much! Great fantasy, not so much with the realistic or likeable relationships.
Anthony Hopkins did a fabulous Hannibal Lecter, so does that make you think that perhaps he's a psychotic cannibal?
O.O POINT! I ♥ you!

J.K. Rowling's kind of a shit hetero romance writer, but would you consider her gay?
NO. But if she wrote many books and consistently wrote shitty hetero romance, yet whenever lesbian romance came up it was brilliantly written, I'd fucking wonder, yeah.
Or, for another example:
In the American version of Queer as Folk, the character of Brian was played brilliantly by Gale Harold (who has said he's heterosexual). I'd be stupid to think he might be gay on the basis of that one performance.
If, on the other hand, he consistently played gay characters well, or had a lot of subtext with male costars, and consistently failed to play straight characters as convincingly straight (which he doesn't, but this is an example), I wouldn't really be fussed about people wondering if he was actually in the closet.
Now, if that were the case, it COULD be something else: awkwardness with women, feeling uncomfortable doing sex/make-out scenes with another woman (if he was partnered), not getting along with all his female costars for some reason. But it might also be that he's gay and just not a good enough actor to hide it when he's supposed to. (Well, all of those reasons involve not being good enough to hide it, so he'd be lacking in talent/skill regardless.)
Or, conversely, look at Hal Sparks in the first season of that show. He's also a heterosexual actor, and frankly, he was awful and unconvincing as a gay man. He was paired up with another actor who was also straight and just as uncomfortable as he was, and it comes across. Scenes where he's clearly supposed to be experiencing pleasure read more as, "OH GOD CALL CUT ALREADY, I'M GONNA PUKE." Why, because straight actors can't play gay? No, because Hal Sparks isn't that good.
(Now, in the case of Hal Sparks, I also couldn't make judgments on the basis of that one performance; except Sparks himself has said that it made him deeply uncomfortable to play gay, so I feel pretty safe in pegging his own sexuality as the reason for the shit performance as a gay man.)
If the actor in question (in the OP, not familiar) ISN'T actually out, I think the OP is jumping to conclusions with "110% gay" but what they said isn't necessarily about gay actors in general, just this guy in particular.
You (and everyone else who replied to me, it seems) read as much into my comment as I think the anon I replied to read into the OP.
