He's terrifying. Of course, I find that people dressed as trains generally are.

Why is it that every time I describe this musical to someone, he or she reacts with reluctance?

"What's Starlight Express about?"

"It's about trains."

"See ya."

That aside, Caboose reads as gay to me. I'm not entirely sure why.

Personally, I don't mind that it's about trains; there's just something about the costumes and make-up that scares me, and also makes me feel as though I'm eleven years old and I've eaten too much candy corn. The same goes for Cats and parts of Back to the Future 2.

In general, though, I guess a musical about anthropomorphic trains is just an easy target, regardless of its quality. Maybe it's because they're viewed as childish and, therefore, inappropriate for anything that's not animated or exclusively for children. I don't know, really.

How fitting it is that you say that. Starlight Express was originally intended to be an animated film, but the project was never completed. In the 1980s, Lloyd Webber wanted to adapt Thomas the Tank Engine to the stage, but was unable to finagle the desired creative control, so rather than discard the idea of a train musical, he turned to his old notes for the cartoon. Eventually, this choice led to Starlight Express.

But if your hypothesis is correct, then I have to ask a few questions of everyone who instantly decided to dislike Starlight Express:

1. Did you see any of the Toy Story movies?
   
2. Did you enjoy any of them?
   
3. Did you think they were deep and meaningful?
   
4. Would you be annoyed if anyone called them "children's movies"?
   

While Starlight Express isn't inherently deep and meaningful, it's very important to me as a person. Not only did it motivate me to exercise, but it made me believe in God.

Those are all good questions. Some of the best things that I've read or seen have been made with children in mind.
