ikr? Many people with locked comms claim they do it to prevent hotlinking, but unless their stuff is being hotlinked en masse at a place getting tons of hits, as someone on iconrants pointed out, the bandwidth used by a single hotlinker would barely register a blip on your total bandwidth usage. Furthermore, if a graphics comm has hundreds of members, is the owner really going to check up on every one of them to make sure they're being credited/not hotlinked?

Strikes me as a cheap way to get members, tbh

See, I have a icon journal. Now, I use photobucket and only make icons, so I don't worry about hotlinking really. And that journal has only seven people watching it, four of which are my friends. Still, even if I made banners/wallpapers, I wouldn't bother making my journal friends only.

First off, I can't help but feel that doing that makes you seem so arrogant. "My stuff is so good only selected people can see it." Um, no. Also, yes, it comes off as a desperate way to make yourself look popular.

I don't really care about popularity. I do ask for credit (though, I won't get that upset if someone doesn't), and I love, love, love when people comment; I admit, it makes me happy. Yes, it's a bit of an ego thing, but I have this odd fascination to see what people use for their keywords for my icons. I love when people get creative with keywords. I don't know why. I just love going through people's userpics just to see what they come up with.

But bottomline, I just want people to enjoy my icons. That's THE POINT of them. If I didn't want everyone to have easy access to them, I wouldn't have made an icon journal to begin with.
